Digital, 5 ideas for those who want to start working

Digital

The spread of the Covid-19 pandemic, the increased awareness of the effects of the climate crisis and the outbreak of war in Ukraine have made it even more difficult for many, especially for the new generations, to look to the future with optimism. “ If we put these three misfortunes together - explains Alberto Calcagno, CEO of Fastweb since 2013 -, it is easy to understand why the new generations in particular have lost faith in the future. In these conditions it is therefore essential for me to find a 'flame', which is able to reverse this estrangement from the future. I wanted to bring the future back in front of people's eyes, especially the younger ones ". And it is precisely these young people - and not only them - that Tu sei futuro, the new book by Calcagno, is aimed at in bookstores from Tuesday 29 November 2022. The volume is proposed as a guide, a reminder for all those who are starting to lay the foundations for their future in the digital world.

“ The 'you' to whom I address in the title refers to everyone: the For me, the concept of future is closely linked to that of potential - specifies Calcagno - Of course, young people are more advantaged, but there is also a lot of potential in an elderly person who wants to be a protagonist of the digital revolution (each with their own interests and one's available time), in a middle-aged unemployed person who cannot find a job, or in a young person who does not yet have clear ideas about the university course in which he wants to enrol".

“ This book is a mirror - continues Calcagno -. It serves to make people understand that the future is not decided by a chemical-medical laboratory in Wuhan, it is not decided in a G20, but we are the future, just a few steps further on. The future looks like us. Being able to make people understand that the future is actually a temporal translation of our condition seems simple, but it is a Copernican revolution. It would be a huge step forward: it would mean that everyone would have confidence in their own abilities and would fight against this apathy we have ended up in with a constructive attitude. The power of this 'mirror' lies in the fact that it manages to activate and ignite a potential in everyone". Bringing people closer to the future by giving them the opportunity to have a meeting point with new technologies is also the aim of Step, Fastweb's FuturAbility District located in Piazza Olivetti in Milan. In addition to being the title of Calcagno's book, in fact, Tu sei futuro is also the motto that can be read in front of the headquarters. Among those provided by Step, visitors will be able to take part in immersive experiences with artificial intelligence and the appropriate app, and personalized activities are planned for first and second grade secondary school classes.

According to Calcagno, there are 5 points that those who want to pursue a career - or are thinking of a future - in digital must keep in mind.

Finding a starting point Define a direction ; Be updated on the jobs of the future; Fill up on confidence; Draw your own trajectory;

1. Finding a starting point

“ The first step - reveals Calcagno - is to be aware of our present, that is, to be clear from where we start. To imagine a future we must be clear about where we are today. To do this, we have to do a clinical check up, or rather talk to ourselves. It means being transparent and not mystifying ourselves, but honestly judging and telling about our strengths in education and work, our qualities and our talents and evaluating our activities that have had an impact on society ”. To do this it is necessary to consider both our strengths and weaknesses, says the CEO, “ the most important thing is to put everything in black and white, it helps to crystallize our thoughts ”.

2. Defining a direction

Once the starting point has been established, the next step is to define the direction in which we want to proceed: “In this context, from my point of view, the future passes through digital skills. Digital is not a subject for the few, it is not an unintelligible language - specifies Calcagno -, digital is a language, like English in the eighties: at the time we were told that English would open many doors for us, it would allow us to travel and work, get to know new cultures. Here, digital is the English of the next 50 years. The difference is that it is necessary to find courses, training centers for the digital ”.

Thanks to the Fastweb Digital Academy, Fastweb proposes itself as a training center for the digital, which deals "both with providing basic skills and with providing courses to improve one's own vertical skills, suitable for those who want become a 3D video game programmer for Japanese companies, or anyone who wants to become a cybersecurity expert - continues Calcagno - So far we have trained more than 50,000 people, and 35% of them have found a new job or improved their working conditions ”.

The goal is to train 500,000 people by 2025. " A very ambitious goal, but we believe, in fact, that companies like ours also have a very strong social responsibility, also because a company like ours knows what the jobs of the future are . This is why we want to issue digital licenses - continues Calcagno -. Today the market is only concerned with building digital highways, with increasing digital lanes. If we continue like this, we risk having a 20-lane motorway, only one of which is occupied. We want to enlighten as many people as possible in the shortest time possible ”.

3. Knowing the jobs of the future

After having clarified our starting point and the direction we want to take, it is necessary to start thinking about what arrival points there may be. Calcagno insists that there is still a lot to be done to make the job positions of the future visible: “ One of the most blocking points for the new generations is that they do not know the jobs they will then go on to do. For me, it is essential to give  visibility, where it is not enough to mention and name dropping, it is necessary to show and display these works. Focus on specific activities. Show the main projects, objectives and products to the students. Show them a trailer of what their future life could be like. Once we turned to older siblings, parents or teachers, and the answer was always the same: 'you are an architect, an accountant, a lawyer'. These are not the jobs of the future ”. Among the jobs of the future, Calcagno mentions the ethical hacker, or the garbage designer, “an expert who, when designing a product, thinks not only of its first life, but also of the third and fourth life after having made a certain number of steps in the recycling cycle”.

4. Fill up on confidence

In Step, Fastweb's FuturAbility District, visitors can measure their level of FuturAbility, or "how much future they have inside. Visitors will face 10 digital rooms with an app downloaded on their device, through an artificial intelligence algorithm, which will triangulate their interests, your digital skills and their aptitude, will be able to cluster them and tell them how much future there is in them" At this point, those who have taken the test will receive some indications on the ad hoc training course based specifically on their skills and interests.  " It is a super immersive experience that puts your future at the center".

5. Design your own trajectory

“ At this point, an 18-year-old can finally say 'Well, I want to become a garbage designer, and now I know how to do it'. Or, 'I want to become an ethical hacker and now I have the tools' - explains Calcagno -. This only works if we are aware that the future has our own DNA and it depends on how much we want to question ourselves. The best companion on this whole journey is ourselves. The future needs us, but we want to believe in it. Although the starting point does not always satisfy us, it is necessary to maintain a certain level of optimism. He will have very solid footholds. Step by step we need to build self-confidence,” she glosses.
