During the episode, all the protagonists put their lives at stake, some in the middle of a clash, some to save the living left to die outside the Estates by Governor Milton who was finally arrested.
After a one-year time jump, we see a fresh start in the Commonwealth, under the leadership of Governor Ezekiel Sutton, Lieutenant Governor Michael Mercer and Lieutenant Governor Carol Peletier: now the survivors work to make the Commonwealth a better place in which everyone can live. Eugene and Max (Margot Bingham) have welcomed a baby girl, named Rosie. The tight-knit group of Yumiko (Eleanor Matsuura), Magna (Nadia Hilker), sisters Kelly (Angel Theory), and Connie (Lauren Ridloff) have settled in the Commonwealth. Lydia (Cassady McClincy) and Elijah (Okea Eme-Akwari) are messengers for the related communities of Commonwealth, Hilltop and Alexandria.

Negan has moved elsewhere. Maggie and her son Hershel Rhee (Kien Michael Spiller) have returned to the Hilltop, intent on building a new future together.
Daryl, on the other hand, has spent time away from the Commonwealth exploring “the border". After Judith reveals the truth about Michonne's mission, Daryl vows to keep an eye on his parents and bring them home. Parting ways with Carol and Ezekiel, leaving the Grimes children in their care, Daryl has gone off into the unknown.
Ultimately, The Walking Dead concludes, through character dialogue throughout the episode and throughout the entire narrative overview, like a story that through death, is essentially about life. The last joke of the series fell to Judith and her parents, who in the end, in fact, reveal their sentence: “ We are the ones who survive”.
