Rumors of a DCU project involving Lobo first surfaced after Gunn posted a photo of the character on the social media platform Mastodon. Moreover, Momoa himself has long expressed his interest in the role of Lobo, well before he was officially chosen for the role of Aquaman, in 2014.


Created by writer Roger Slifer and artist Keith Giffen, Lobo first appeared in DC Comics' Omega Men # 3 in 1983. Hailing from the planet of Czarnia, Lobo is a bounty hunter and interstellar mercenary who has crossed paths with countless superheroes like Superman, both in print and on television. Lobo has been portrayed several times in animation, but has only officially appeared once in live-action, played by Emmett J. Scanlan in the second season of the drama series Syfy Krypton.
