The Rings of Power: who are the Valar and what powers do they have?

The Rings of Power

The Valar are vital to the fantasy world created by J. R. R. Tolkien. Frodo's journey to Mordor and, even before that, the events of the Rings of Power, are but a snapshot of Tolkien's mythology. Long before all of this, in the distant beginning, there was only the supreme Creator, Eru Ilúvatar. Just like in the biblical tradition, Eru gave birth to the Valar, the fantasy equivalent of the Archangels.

Endowed with divine powers and an immortal life, the Valar are revered throughout Middle-earth, regardless of race, region or age. Charged with watching over the Sons of Ilúvatar (Elves and Men), the Valar intervened firsthand only in the most difficult circumstances, spending most of their lives in Valinor. But, originally, the Valar lived on the island of Almaren ("Holy Place"), as Tolkien himself tells us in the Silmarillion, the work that, most of all, tells the story of these immortal beings:

“And there, on the Isle of Almaren in the Great Lake, was the first home of the Valar, when all things were young and the fresh green was still a marvel in the eyes of the craftsmen; and for a long time they were pleased ”.
