Interview with Jessica Gao: “She-Hulk will be the everyday life of superheroes”
A quick but pleasant interview during which Jessica Gao wanted to reiterate how the comic aspect of She-Hulk, easily deduced from the trailer shown at the San Diego Comicon, is not the only nature of the series. Behind the construction of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, in fact, there is a desire to portray a female character who, net of the obvious superhero context, is real, with which a female audience can easily empathize. It should not be forgotten, in fact, that in the comic dimension She-Hulk, although valued as a female role model, has always been told by screenwriters, such as Byrne, Soule or Slott, who despite having tried with good results to give a concrete and real vision of it. , could not offer the female point of view that necessarily accompanies a character like Jennifer Walters. The opportunity to have a strongly female production was a unique opportunity for Jessica Gao and the production of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, as the screenwriter revealed to us, to whom we immediately asked how this responsibility affected her approach to the series:
"Well, you know at first I approached it thinking only about how I could develop the character. Because you know, she is really similar to me: she is a woman of thirty, a professional, she has a career, an extended family, friends. Because, you know, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe we rarely see these characters in their daily lives, we hardly see them spending time with their family and friends. And I thought this character looks a lot like me from that point of view. But how would I have reacted if what happened to her had happened to me? Considering that everything happens suddenly without her asking for anything ... she Suddenly she receives these powers and becomes a Hulk. I would have gone mad, I would have said that I don't have time to handle this, that I don't want to deal with it, I have a lot of other things on my to-do list, I don't want to be forced to be a Hulk. And it is from all this that I started to approach the story ”
"We have a fantastic staff of writers, with a strong female presence: we only have two male writers and, counting me, we have seven female writers. It was great because it is thanks to this that we have so many different women, who come from different paths, have different points of view and different experiences. Because, you know, women are not a monolith. We are not all the same and therefore you cannot really think that one or two people could represent half the population of the planet. So having so many, different women who have all these different life experiences and who come from different walks of life has created all of this, a more complete tapestry of what it means to be a woman ”

While wanting to maintain this emotional enhancement of the character, a precise comic matrix is evident in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. As seen in the trailer, not only will there be funny scenes for the exchanges between Jennifer and her cousin, Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), but it has also been chosen to introduce the breakthrough of the fourth wall, taking up a typical trait of John Bryne's management of the She-Hulk comics. An identity that is well explained by Jessica Gao, who reveals her creative path to get to introduce an unforced comedy within the superhero canon typical of the Marvel Cinematic Universe:
My background is the television comedy. That was my focus: first and foremost comedy. An aspect that was not so difficult to reconcile the Marvel action, to combine with its drama and comedy. Because my favorite kind of comedy, my favorite humor, is to take these big ideas, like a superhero who has to save a universe and with such high expectations, to take all of that and put it into everyday life. For me that's the funniest thing. In the movies, it's always about saving the universe, saving humanity 'They will all die if we don't' and we need to focus on that. I love this show that it is as if we were practically telling what happens in the weeks between one destruction of the universe and the next, when apparently nothing happens. How is Tuesday for this character, do you understand? Because she's like that on Tuesdays too, she's a ten-foot Hulk, and you know, even if you're a superhero, you have to go home at some point. You have to clean the kitchen, you have to call your mother. And just being able to explore this everyday life, but playing these incredible heroes is fun for me. Do you understand how funny She-Hulk is?

It was really hard work, I would say it was hard work first and foremost. But a lot! It was really hard to do the show, but we had an amazing cast, and in truth, Tatiana is probably the best person on Earth. Seeing her and Mark working together was so much fun, because they had this immediate chemistry, so much so that looking at them together, it's like you said: when you look at them they really seem to be cousins. You know, you really think 'Oh These two have known each other all their lives', you know they have common relatives, they've probably seen each other at every party, family reunion, they know how to tease each other. It was really fun. In the best moments while we were shooting it seemed like we were all together at the summer camp.
