All Kindles are now compatible with the ePub format

Amazon has confirmed that all new Kindles are finally compatible with the most popular ebook format in the world, namely ePub. Apparently it might seem bizarre but the US e-commerce giant has always focused on its proprietary formats Azw, Azw3 and Kfx, and snubbing ePub which is the de facto standard of all competing online bookstores. Obviously the Kindles are also compatible with Txt, Pdf, Mobi and other types but the battleground is precisely another.

Over the years, Kindle owners have therefore been forced to buy books on Amazon or to buy ebook on other platforms and then proceed independently to convert the files using free software or online services. For example, one of the historical applications for this activity is Caliber, a bumper for a novice but efficient in converting and managing cover metadata and other details.

In any case, Amazon has updated the help page of the more convenient service for transferring ebooks to Kindles (Send to Kindle) and highlighted the renewed support for the ePub format. Also in the datasheets of the Kindles, Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Oasis it appeared in the list of compatible standards.

This means that users can send an email to their device (each has an address, which can also be personalized) by attaching an ebook in this format and then proceed with reading. Technically, Amazon automatically converts the received file into its KF8 format (Kindle Format 8). An important detail is that they must be ePub ebooks without digital rights management (Drm), that is the technology of protection and therefore encryption.

Another novelty is that by the end of the year the possibility of uploading files in Mobi and .Azw format will be suspended. In practice, the old standards are abandoned, but there is no need to worry because our collections will remain usable. Amazon will convert the old formats automatically.

Amazon How to send ebooks or documents to your Kindle The easiest way to read an ebook you just bought is obviously to use the Amazon library. In practice, every time you proceed with the transaction, perhaps via pc, via Kindle or via smartphone or tablet, even via the Kindle app, the title is automatically downloaded in your Library section.

If, however, you prefer other online bookstores, it is more convenient to proceed via PC and once you have downloaded the file corresponding to the ebook, send it by email to the address of your Kindle. The latter is indicated in several positions.

For example, by starting the Kindle, simply access Settings, then select Your account and finally read the reference to the item Kindle e-mail address. The alternative is to start the Kindle app (iOS and Android), click on More at the bottom right, then Settings and scroll down the list to Send to Kindle email address. The last possibility is to go to the Amazon.it site, type in your login and password, place the mouse at the top right on Accounts and Lists, scroll down the drop-down menu and select My contents and devices. Then in the devices section it will be sufficient to click on the Kindle and then in the related summary copy the indicated email address or create a new one such as MyKindle@kindle.com.

Send to Kindle (Send to Kindle) is activated by sending an email, or using the extension for Chrome, the application for Windows, Mac, Android (via Amazon Appstore) and iOs. After each submission, you will receive a verification email from Amazon and simply click on the link indicated. Remember that for now this system supports files in Microsoft Word, Html, Rtf, Text, Jpeg, Gif, Png, Bmp, Pdf, ePub and mobi format. While sending via iOS and Android apps supports fewer formats and still lacks ePub compatibility.
