No more Luca Marinelli in the sequels to Diabolik

The rumors had been in the air for months, but the official announcement only arrived in recent days thanks to an interview with the microphones of Esquire Italia. No more Luca Marinelli in the sequels to Diabolik, directed once again by the Manetti Bros. In his place will be the Italian-Canadian Giacomo Gianniotti, known for his appearances in the TV series Grey's Anatomy and Station 19.

An actor change that, according to the directors, depended on Marinelli's new contractual commitments and on the implications of the pandemic, which forced the release of the first film to be postponed by one year. Diabolik arrived in theaters on December 16, 2021, received in a mixed way by critics and audiences (read our review here).


But that's not all, because the two new ones films will act as a real "origin story" of the king of terror, explaining how his figure was born and where he grew up. Born in 1989, Giacomo Gianniotti also starred in La Bomba, directed by Giulio Base, and Race - Il Colore della Vittoria, directed by Stephen Hopkins.

Daibolik's first film, on the other hand, was based on the third issue of the first series, entitled The Arrest of Diabolik, famous for the first appearance of Eva. Despite receiving a somewhat lukewarm reception at the box-office, the film garnered 11 nominations for the 2022 David di Donatello Awards, including Best Non-Original Screenplay, Best Actress and Best Original Song.

'absence of Marinelli, Miriam Leone and Luca Mastandrea should return in the sequel again as Eva Kant and Inspector Ginko. At the moment a release date of Diabolik 2 and 3 has not yet been set.
