What the teaser trailer of the Obi-Wan Kenobi miniseries tells us

Obi-Wan Kenobi is back. In the past few hours, in fact, the teaser trailer of the new miniseries has been released which will arrive on May 25 on Disney + and will have the Jedi knight played by Ewan McGregor as the protagonist. More than 15 years after the Star Wars prequel trilogy, the Australian actor is back in one of his most memorable roles and attentive fans will also be able to notice the music that accompanied The Phantom Menace in the background. For years we have been talking about a project concerning Obi-Wan, first in film form and then in series, but after long delays, finally all this will take shape thanks to the screenplay by Joby Harold (Army of the Dead) and the direction of Deborah Chow, who had already directed some episodes of The Mandalorian.

As you can see in the preview clip, we are in fact about ten years after the events of Revenge of the Sith, which had seen the definitive passage to the dark side of Anakin Skywalker (the future Darth Vader) and the massacre of the Jedi Knights with the Empire that had by now had the road paved for conquest of the galaxy. Obi-Wan himself, among the very few surviving Jedi, admits defeat and lives in great secrecy on the desert planet of Tatooine, where, however, he has a very important task: to control little Luke Skywalker from afar. As seen in A New Hope, the boy lives with his uncles Owen (Joel Edgerton) and Beru (Bonnie Piesse), who are likely to play a bigger role in this adventure.

Then we see the images of a threatening fortress of the Empire, and this is precisely the moment in which we hear the famous soundtrack of the first Star Wars, to be precise the song Duel of the Fates by John Williams, historical composer of the music of this saga and who also returns for this miniseries. In this dark place we are introduced to those who will be the real villains of the series, or the Grand Inquisitor (Rupert Friend of Homeland), the one who has the task of coordinating the research of the surviving Jedi and exterminating them, and Reva (Moses Ingram, seen in The Chess Queen and Macbeth), one of his henchmen who sets out in search of Obi-Wan on Tatooine, threatening the local population.

The most attentive will have noticed in the trailer the introduction of a new planet, Daiyu, with settings reminiscent of Blade Runner. It is not yet known what will push the characters to travel to this planet but it is certain that it will be the scene of some action scenes that will involve the same Reva. Later we also see other images of the Grand Inquisitor: the character was originally introduced in the animated series Star Wars Rebels and represents the highest in office of the Inquisitors of the Empire, who responds directly to Darth Vader. We know for sure that the latter will also appear in the series, after confirming the involvement of Hayden Christensen, the actor who plays him as a young man in the prequel trilogy. Among the other characters we also see an imperial officer played by Indira Varma (Game of Thrones), while in the cast there will also be names like Kumail Nanjiani, O'Shea Jackson Jr., Benny Safdie and Maya Erskine.

It also remains to understand what Obi-Wan's actual role will be in the series: in these images we see him for most of the time on the sidelines, observing what happens from a distance. It is also possible that he has definitely decided to stop fighting but that something happens in the series that pushes him to get back into action. The mysteries related to the plot are still numerous, we just have to wait for the six episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi to debut in a few months.
