Obi-Wan Kenobi: from the movie to the Disney Plus series

The eagerly awaited Star Wars series Obi-Wan Kenobi was initially a movie. The original project was in fact to include this period of the Jedi master's life within the Star Wars Stories, a series of films that were supposed to expand the universe of the saga and which took the form of Rogue One and Solo. Confirming that Obi-Wan was initially a film was Ewan McGregor himself, who played Obi-Wan from The Phantom Menace.

Before being a limited series, Obi-Wan Kenobi was a Star Wars Stories movie

Initially, the idea was to make a film, but LucasFilm was rather reticent without McGregor's direct confirmation that he wants to take up the lightsaber again. At Entertainment Weekly, McGregor related this passage:

“They told me 'Listen, we heard you'd be happy to do that. We just want to know if you said it to be nice or if you really want to do it, because we are thinking it is an option. But we want to know if you are in it. I just said 'Absolutely yes!' ”


"When Bob Iger clearly said 'We have to change our priorities to make series for Disney +, we are about to launch our streaming service', that decided our change of strategy. We began to look at the possibilities offered by a streaming service for a broader story-telling work, and we understood that it was an opportunity to experiment in this area without the pressure of making a film "

Thus, Obi-Wan Kenobi's film became a six-episode series, and the director of the series Deborah Chow is keen to point out that this concept of a complete story has also remained in the development of the Disney Plus series:

“Era conceived from the beginning as a limited series, it is a great story with a beginning, a middle and an ending. We approached production as a complete story ”

Obi-Wan Kenobi will arrive on Disney Plus on May 25th.

OBI-WAN KENOBI: Lucasfilm President Teases Possible Season 2 Plans Despite It Being A 'Limited Series'

Set 10 years after the events of Revenge of the Sith, Obi-Wan Kenobi looks set to follow the former Jedi Master as he leaves Tatooine on a rescue mission when young Princess Leia is kidnapped. Sith Inquisitors will take aim at the fallen hero, while the stage is clearly being set for a rematch between Kenobi and Darth Vader that better explains their final duel in A New Hope. 

The six-episode limited series will explain 'what had happened to Obi-Wan between the guy that Ewan had brought to life and the guy that Sir Alec Guinness brought to life' according to writer Joby Harold, and that story will play out on Disney+ beginning May 25. 

But will that be the end of this particular tale?

'It was definitely conceived as a limited series, and it is one big story with a beginning, middle, and end,' says director Deborah Chow. 'The approach has always been that it is one full story.'

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, on the other hand, says a season 2 is 'certainly something we talk about.' She adds that's 'mainly because everybody came together and had such an incredible time. Ewan had an incredible time. Hayden had an incredible time. So certainly from that point of view, everybody involved would love to see this not end.'

'But we have to really spend our time asking the question: Why would we do it?' Kennedy notes, before fans start getting too excited about another batch of episodes. 'If we were to decide to do anything more with the Obi-Wan character, we'd have to really answer the question why?'

There are still gaps in Obi-Wan's life on Tatooine that could be filled by a follow-up series, but Lucasfilm will need to be careful if they hope to avoid telling another story simply for the sake of it. Either way, we know this is unlikely to be the final time we see Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader, as it's previously been reported he'll make an appearance in Ahsoka. 

As for 'Ben' Kenobi, who knows what the future might hold in store for the Jedi Master?

Entertainment Weekly has shared another official image from the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ series, this time giving us a first look at Hayden Christensen as the returning Darth Vader!
