Thermae Romae Novae tells the journey through time of Lucius, a designer of baths in the Roman Empire that arrives in today's Japan, where he learns about the culture of Japanese spas.Tetsuya Tatamitani (Africa Salaryman) directs the series at the NAZ studio based on scripts written by Yuichiro Momose (Africa Salaryman , So I'm a Spider, So What?).

Although the characters and plot of the Thermae Romae Novae anime are based on the Thermae Romae manga, the series will not closely follow the entire narrative. In fact, Yamazaki herself will provide new material and new plots for the Netflix adaptation.

Thermae Romae: the manga
Thermae Romae is written and drawn by Mari Yamazaki and published in Japan in Enterbrain's Comic Beam magazine since February 2008.In Italy it has been published by Star Comics since October 2011 which describes the plot as follows:
In ancient Rome, during the empire of Hadrian, the engineer Lucio specialized in design of thermal baths.
Always looking for new ideas to help bring prestige to the great civilization of the Roman Empire, one fine day, while relaxing taking a bath, he is sucked into a hole in the bottom of the tub, to re-emerge shortly after … In a Japanese thermal bath, nowadays!
Thus begins a bizarre comeback between ancient Rome and modern Japan for the ambitious engineer, during which he will have the opportunity to learn new technologies and develop innovative ideas to apply in his own world of origin!
