The vulnerabilities to which the PC versions of the three Dark Souls are subject had already been communicated to Bandai Namco for some time. This is what emerges from a VGC report: the British colleagues have in fact come into possession of some emails from those who launched the original report, revealing some background that preceded the current problem of the multiplayer sector for a week now.According to what has emerged in the course of the last few hours, the Dark Souls community has warned Bandai Namco of the RCE (Remote Code Execution) exploit already in 2020. Bandai Namco, however, seems to have in fact ignored everything. There is even talk of a PDF document, with several pages about the vulnerability, completely ignored. According to users who discovered the exploit, there are tons of problems with the game's source code, with over 100 hacks that can compromise player security.
Emails sent to Bandai Namco over the past few months in 2021 there were two, which received a decidedly vague response. "All reports have been transferred to the relevant team, in order to take security measures in this regard," the publisher's response. However, these measures were not taken and it seems that the email was also ignored in this case. For over a month, in fact, the servers remained active and the actual shutdown only occurred when the exploit became public. To attract the attention of the development team, one of the users even ran the RCE in a live on Twitch. Needless to say, it worked right away.

The reasons behind this claim would lie in the engine used and in the similarities with the code. It is not clear whether the implemented anti-cheat will be able to stop at least some of the exploits, but the hypothesis appears decidedly unlikely.
We do not yet know when the Dark Souls servers will be back active. However, the disappearance of the multiplayer-related tags from the Steam pages suggests the worst. The hypothesis that they are no longer active does not appear so remote, especially considering how long Bandai Namco has this information.
