The Batman: Zoë Kravitz's Catwoman inspired by cats and lions

The Batman

Zoë Kravitz's Catwoman is inspired by cats and lions. What's the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of Catwoman? A beautiful and cunning thief in a black cat costume who stealthily robs Gotham City's museums and skyscrapers. Sometimes a friend, sometimes an enemy of Batman, she is perhaps one of the most ambiguous characters in DC Comics.

Catwoman is also a formidable fighter, menacing as a cat, and has been able to hold her own against many of Gotham's underhanded criminals. Well, the actress Zoë Kravitz became Catwoman by watching videos of cats and lions in order to understand how to best make the movements of her character in the film.

Zoë Kravitz's Catwoman and Lion Inspired Catwoman

Zoë Kravitz embraced the feline side of her Catwoman in The Batman, by director Matt Reeves! To best emulate the animal movements her character embodies, the actress worked with stunt coordinator Robert Alonzo for his physical training and, among other things, saw footage of cats and lions fighting for understand how his character would move.

We observed the behavior of cats and lions during their fights and tried to set up some credible moves for a fighter of my size. Batman is much bigger and stronger than me. My skill obviously couldn't be brute force, so I had to be fast and unpredictable. So we did a lot of work in the gym to implement different martial arts styles and mix them with a kind of dance inspired by cat movements.

The actress has insisted that fans will see a new version of Catwoman in The Batman precisely because in the film she has yet to become the femme fatale, already seen in adaptations such as Batman Returns, The Dark Knight or even Catwoman of 2004.

This in a certain sense is also the story of the origins of Selin a, it is a story that makes us understand who she is, and I think there is a lot of room for maneuver to grow her and transform her into an ultimate femme fatale

The Batman will have a stellar cast: Robert Pattinson as Batman / Bruce Wayne; Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman / Selina Kyle; Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner James Gordon and Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth. The film will also feature Paul Dano as the Riddler / Edward Nashton, Colin Farrell as the Penguin / Oswald Cobblepot and John Turturro as Carmine Falcone.

The Batman's Robert Pattinson reveals hopes for two more movies

The Batman hasn't even been released yet, but that hasn't stopped Robert Pattinson from hoping that he'll get to play Bruce Wayne again in multiple sequels.

In Empire magazine's current issue, which is centred on the upcoming DC movie, the actor revealed that he's 'made a kind of map' as to where the character's 'psychology would grow over two movies.' He also confirmed that if Warner Bros. was to approach him about donning the cape and cowl once – or preferably, twice – more, he wouldn't hesitate to say 'yes'.

'I would love to do it,' Pattinson admitted matter-of-factly, as producer Dylan Clark added: 'As the first stand-alone Batman in 10 years, the hope is we can lay a foundation that you can build stories upon.'

Last year, it was announced that HBO Max was developing a prequel series to The Batman that'll revolve around Gotham PD. Since then, rumours of a show exploring Colin Farrell's Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin has also emerged. Only time will tell as to whether they actually come into fruition.

Directed by Matt Reeves, the new film also stars Big Little Lie's Zoë Kravitz (as Selina Kyle/ Catwoman), Westworld's Jeffrey Wright (as detective James Gordon), Paul Dano (Riddler) and Andy Serkis, playing Bruce's butler Alfred.

'I've only ever made each movie as a passion project,' Reeves explained in the same feature. 'This even more so, because when you know something has been done well before, and is so beloved, you can't just come in and sleepwalk through it. You have to shoot for something. We're trying to leave our mark on this.'

'For some reason, Batman has always stood out as one of the major characters of the 20th century, and so many people connect with it on such a deep level for so many different reasons,' Pattinson explained during CinemaCon in August (via Entertainment Weekly).

'From the first conversation I had with Matt about it, I just knew that there was something radically different [here].

'It seems things go further and further into fantasy, and I thought, well, one place we haven't been is grounding it in the way that Year One does, to come right in to a young Batman, not being an origin tale, but referring to his origins and shaking him to his core.'

The Batman has a release date of March 4, 2022.
