New RTX 3080 and RTX 3070 Ti with more memory are coming

A new Gigabyte registration (reported by leaker @momomo_us) with the Eurasian Economic Commission (CEE) indicates that NVIDIA will equip the GeForce RTX 3080 and GeForce RTX 3070 Ti with more memory. We remember that not everything that has been subjected to the EEC arrives on the market; therefore, it is not certain that we will really see the commercialization of these products.

The 10GB of GDDR6X of the GeForce RTX 3080 has often been the subject of discussion among enthusiasts and hardcore gamers. For a graphics card that retails for $ 699 and aims for 4K gaming, 10GB may not seem like a lot. AMD's Radeon RX 6800 XT, which competes with the GeForce RTX 3080, has a lower recommended price ($ 649) and more memory (16GB).

According to Gigabyte, a revamped GeForce RTX may be in the works 3080 with 12GB of VRAM. However, one wonders whether GDDR6 or GDDR6X memory will be used: with a wider 384-bit interface, 16Gb / s GDDR6 would provide 768GB / s of bandwidth. With the GeForce RTX 3070 Ti, NVIDIA opted for 19Gb / s GDDR6X memory, a substantial upgrade over the GeForce RTX 3070's 14Gb / s GDDR6 chips. Although this helped increase the overall bandwidth of the GeForce RTX 3070 Ti, NVIDIA kept the 8GB capacity, which has been a concern for long-term usage. Many modern titles already exceed that limit when run at higher resolutions, especially if ray tracing is enabled.

We think the card will stay with GDDR6X memory, but NVIDIA is often willing to tweak the specs to get the necessary supply of components. Similar to what the 12GB GeForce RTX 2060 represents, the 12GB GeForce RTX 3080 and 16GB GeForce RTX 3070 Ti will be premium versions of the GeForce RTX 3080 and GeForce RTX 3070 Ti, respectively.
