Here's how Tom Holland saved Spider-Man in the MCU

After Spider-Man joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Captain America: Civil War, most fans never expected the character to even be at risk. Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home, in fact, have proved to be giants at the box office and great successes for Marvel Studios.

When Sony threatened to break its deal with Marvel and withdraw Spider-Man from the MCU, fans were literally shocked to learn that they would lose one of their favorite characters for Sony and Marvel's inability to reach an agreement. It was far away 2019 and Spider-Man was really in danger of leaving the Marvel Universe.

How Tom Holland saved Spider-Man

Speaking with CinemaBlend, Tom Holland recounted a tragicomic anecdote that, according to him, helped save the Spider-Man deal between Sony and Marvel. In fact, one evening, during a quiz night at the local pub, Tom Holland received a call from then Disney CEO Bob Iger and the two talked about the future of the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.

Mi I was in a pub quiz. I am pretty drunk because I was really upset that I wasn't going to be in the MCU again. Then I got a call from a number 310; I knew Bob Iger would call me but I thought he would do it a few days earlier. So I thought he had given up on the call, but then I got one and it was him.

The actor, therefore, wanted to speak with an open heart:

Bob and I had a good chat about my passion for the character. I think I've talked about the importance of Spider-Man in the MCU and what I can offer with my knowledge and skills. I think my arguments convinced him and he really understood in that conversation how much I love this character and how much I believe in him. Bob subsequently opened a bigger dialogue with [Sony Pictures president] Tom Rothman and [Sony Pictures CEO] Tony Vinciquerra and they managed to strike a deal.

The Future of Spider-Man

Tom Holland recently stated that Spider-Man: No Way Home is going to be a very dark, sad and not at all funny movie. He also promised that it will be one of the most ambitious films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, the actor has made it clear that Spider-Man: No Way Home will only be the end of the Homecoming trilogy and that the film will mark the beginning of the shared universe between Sony and Marvel.

As previously reported, the producer of the franchise Amy Pascal has recently revealed that after the end of the original trilogy, Tom Holland will star in another trilogy which, much to the delight of the fans , will mark a new beginning for Spider-Man.
