Ninja Turtles are back on the big screen after a half-decade hiatus. To break the news Deadline, who announced that Paramount Picture has chosen the brothers Colin and Casey Jost as screenwriters.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) born in 1984 thanks to the homonymous comic series by Peter Laird, were the protagonists of six films between 1990 and 2016. The franchise has also given life to several cartoons, as well as countless video games and merchandise, so much so that the four martial arts turtles have become a staple in popular culture.

The latest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, released in 2016, sequel to the reboot live-action from the 2014 Paramount franchise, both produced by Transformers director Michael Bay. However, the film has received numerous negative reviews and poor box office results.

As for the new film, currently being written, Deadline reports that it will be written by SNL veteran Colin Jost, known for working on the NBC's Saturday Night Live since 2005 and currently one of the show's lead writers and co-host of its long-running Weekend Update segment, and his brother Casey Jost, producer of truTV's Impractical Jokers. Michael Bay is also expected to return as a producer, along with Andrew Form, Brad Fuller, Scott Mednick and Galen Walker. Plot details are still secret, so it's unclear whether the Jost brothers' film will be a direct sequel to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows or a totally new movie.

Ninja Turtles: a series born in 1984

Ninja Turtles comes to light as a science fiction comic series in 1984 thanks to the designers Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird and published in the United States of America from the US publishing house Mirage Studios. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series which began in August 2011 which recounts the origins of the Turtles, was published in Italy by Panini Comics starting from May 2013 while BD editions of J-POP published the 4-release Bodycount miniseries.

Between 1985 and 2000 Palladium Books released the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles & Other Strangeness roleplaying game based on the setting of the original comic and later dozens of official video games about Ninja Turtles were released, between 1989-1993 and since 2003.

As for the animated series, the first was Ninja Turtles to the rescue and it aired in the United States from 1987 to 1996, for a total of 193 episodes divided into ten seasons. Three more series followed, a live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the films and two crossovers Turtles Forever and Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
