Week 2 of the NFL preseason kicked off with a matchup between the Patriots and Eagles on Thursday night. After a late scratch due to an illness, we did not get to see Jalen Hurts in this one. Here are the final score, results, and highlights for the Patriots vs. Eagles preseason clash.
Patriots vs. Eagles score and resultsQ1Q2Q3Q4FPatriots13613335Eagles00000The Patriots vs. Eagles game was a difficult one to watch if you are a Philadelphia fan. From the very first quarter, New England dominated this game, going up 13-0 early. The offensive line struggled to protect their QBs, their defense couldn’t stop the run or the pass, and the offense looked anemic without Jalen Hurts, who was a last-minute scratch with an illness.
New England put on an offensive display in this one. Their running game proved just how much depth it has. Mac Jones and Cam Netwon both threw for over 100 yards, and Newton notched a touchdown pass as well. However, the real star of this show was once again rookie RB Rhamondre Stevenson.
Stevenson, the RB out of Oklahoma, was drafted in the fourth round, 120th overall by New England. In a crowded backfield, expectations were not very high coming into the preseason. However, in two games, Stevenson has 193 rushing yards and 3 TDs. Stevenson wasn’t the only back scoring in this one. J.J Taylor and Damien Harris both put up touchdowns as well.
Patriots and Eagles highlights and updates10:15 PM ET: After a defensive holding call saved the Eagles’ drive, Mullens’ pass is tipped and results in another INTERCEPTION for New England. The Patriots kneel, and the final score ends 35-0.
10:13 PM ET: The Eagles show their first sign of life on the offense with a nice 20 yard rush by Holyfield. Mullens ran down the field to help block for the big gain.
10:10 PM ET: After a two TD night, Stevenson makes his first mistake of the preseason by fumbling the ball in the Philadelphia end.
9:58 PM ET: The Patriots settle for a 24-yard FIELD GOAL from Nordin.
9:55 PM ET: Hoyer continues to move the ball for the Patriots; so far, he is 2/2 for 30 yards. The run game has also continued to thrive, but with Taylor now carrying the load. The Patriots are once again in the red zone.
9:50 PM ET: Brian Hoyer has replaced Jones as the starting QB in the fourth quarter. On his first throw of the night, he completes a 20-yard bomb to Kristian Wilkerson.
9:42 PM ET: Nothing is going well for the Eagles tonight. Mullens goes down again for the Patriots’ fourth sack of the night. This drive ends with a quick three and out.
9:37 PM ET: Stevenson continues to be the preseason All-Star with his second TOUCHDOWN run of the night. Nordin makes his first extra point of the night. The Patriots now lead 32-0.
9:33 PM ET: Mac Jones remains the starter. Similar to last week, Jones has played nearly two full quarters. Both him and Stevenson have been incredible against this questionable Eagles defense.
9:27 PM ET: Holyfield misses the blitz, and Mullens is sacked for a seven-yard loss. The very next play, Barmore comes in and sacks Mullens for another seven-yard loss.
9:23 PM ET: Nick Mullens is now the starting QB for the Eagles. Flacco finishes the night 10/17 for 83 yards and an interception.
9:18 PM ET: Jones has already led the Patriots into the red zone. Two plays later, J.J. Taylor punches it in for a one-yard TOUCHDOWN. Nordin misses the extra point.
9:15 PM ET: The second half starts with Jones still in the game. His second pass of the half is a 17-yard throw to Gunner Olszewski. He is now 8/12 for 91 yards. Jones seems to be competing for the QB1 spot with New England. Both QBs have looked solid tonight.
8:54 PM ET: With less than a minute left in the half on a 4th and 4, Flacco throws the ball in the direction of Reagor. The pass is INTERCEPTED. On the next play, Jones throws a beautiful ball to Harry who falls hard on his shoulder and couldn’t come up with the catch.
8:42 PM ET: With the ball on the 1-yard line, Stevenson punches it in for a TOUCHDOWN. The RBs have now combined for 75 yards; they end a 17-play drive that took nine minutes off of the clock. The two-point conversion is unsuccessful.
8:40 PM ET: The Patriots are closing in on the red zone once again. They have had absolutely no trouble running the ball tonight. Their four backs have combined for 56 yards and a TD. Rhamondre Stevenson has had the best night so far with 23 yards on 4 attempts.
8:33 PM ET: Jones and Sony Michel are showing some rapport together. Jones makes a nice pass to Michel, who then breaks a tackle to take it 19 yards. So far, Jones is 4/5 for 53 yards.
8:29 PM ET: Mac Jones is now the starter for the Patriots. His first play ends with a holding call against New England. On a 3rd and 13, Jones completes a nice pass to N’Keal Harry for 19 yards. The Eagles continue to struggle to get any sort of pass rush on the Patriots’ QBs.
8:25 PM ET: On a fourth-down attempt, Flacco throws to the back of the end zone to Quez Watkins. Lenoir–Rhyne’s Kyle Dugger comes up with a nice play to knock the ball away before it reaches Watkins.
8:21 PM ET: DeVonta Smith makes his first career catch as an Eagle. Philadelphia is marching down the field using a hurry-up offense.
8:18 PM ET: Eagles start the second period with the ball. Two 15-yard penalties get them down the field and give them their best field position of the game. The Patriots continue to play their starters at this point. The Eagles are starting some third-string players.
8:09 PM ET: Newton completes a short pass to Meyers on a crossing route. Meyers powers his way downfield for a 28-yard TOUCHDOWN. The extra point is no good.
8:05 PM ET: Cam Newton remains in the game as the starter. On a scramble, he makes a short pass to James White for the first down. The next throw is to RB Sony Michel. Newton and the Patriots using their RBs early in this one. Their depth is on display right now.
7:55 PM ET: After marching down the field, the Patriots attempt a 36-yard field goal by Quinn Nordin. It is no good, wide right.
7:50 PM ET: With the starting offensive line in, Newton had all kinds of time in the pocket. He completes a dart for 19 yards to Jakobi Meyers. Two plays later, he completes a 23-yard pass to Kendrick Bourne. Newton looks good with a healthy offensive line.
7:45 PM ET: The next series for the Eagles results in a quick three and out. Miles Sanders and Jordan Howard couldn’t combine for a first down after three straight rushing attempts.
7:39 PM ET: A high snap well over the head of Flacco sets up the Patriots in the red zone. Free-agent signing Matthew Judon forces the fumble. RB Damien Harris gets two cracks at the end zone, rushing it in the second time for a TOUCHDOWN. Patriots are up 7-0 two minutes into the game.
