Coronavirus, where are we with adolescent vaccination

Only 40% of those between the ages of 12 and 19 have received at least one dose of the vaccine. But the goal is to immunize 60% before schools reopen

(Photo: Gedesby1989 from Pixabay) Just over a million have completed their vaccination cycle, another 840,000 have started, but there are still missing 2 , 7 million. Meanwhile, they are one of the most affected age groups in this second pandemic summer. One month after the reopening of schools, this is the situation regarding the vaccination of adolescents. The numbers, extracted on 8 August from the Developers Italia databases, show that just under 40% of those between 12 and 19 years old have received at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccine. In short, a substantial share is still missing to reach the 60% coverage set as a goal for the return to school by the coronavirus emergency commissioner Francesco Paolo Figliuolo. The situation, region by region, is represented in this graph:

body.isDesktop .tableauPlaceholder {height: auto! Important;} body.isDesktop .tableauWrapper iframe {height: auto! Important ;;}. TableauWrapper> p {line-height: 0; margin: 0! important;} The higher a flag is, the greater the share of adolescents who have completed the vaccination cycle, the further to the right and the greater the share of those who do not they received not even a dose. The colors of the flag reflect the percentage breakdown between those who have completed the vaccination cycle (green), those who have started it (white) and those who have yet to start it (red). The sizes refer to the population in the age group.

As mentioned, as of August 8, 1.11 million adolescents have completed the vaccination cycle, that is, who have received a double dose of vaccine, or only one if they have been injected with the vaccine. Johnson & Johnson, which requires just one injection. The number also includes those who received only one dose after contracting Sars-CoV-2, which in the database are indicated as vaccinated after "previous infection". Then there are 809 thousand boys and girls between the ages of 12 and 19 who have received a single dose of those vaccines that require a booster to unfold their full effectiveness. Now, taking into account that Istat estimates that there are more than 4.5 million Italians in this age group as of January 1, 2021, this means that 2.7 million adolescents are still to be vaccinated.

In absolute numbers, this is the Lombardy which must immunize the greatest number of people - but it is not surprising given that it is the most populous region in Italy -. This is about 413 thousand people between 12 and 19 years old. In percentage, 53.6%, a figure in any case better than the national average of 60.1% of boys and girls still not protected from the virus. The more complex situation is instead recorded in Umbria, where 74.4% of resident adolescents still have not received even the first dose of the vaccine. While Campania, with 33.7%, is the region in which the highest share has completed the vaccination cycle.

In a context in which the data say that three out of five adolescents remain completely susceptible to contagion , it is not surprising that the age group between 12 and 19 is one of those most affected by the pandemic. This is the situation in the last month:

body.isDesktop .tableauPlaceholder {height: auto! Important;} body.isDesktop .tableauWrapper iframe {height: auto! Important ;;}. TableauWrapper> p {line-height : 0; margin: 0! Important;} Between July 7 and August 4, dates chosen because they coincide with the publication of the weekly bulletins of the Higher Institute of Health, 118 thousand new Sars-CoV positives were recorded in Italy- 2. Of these, 26 thousand fall into the age group between 10 and 19 years. This is 22%. Worse was only in the 20-29 age group, with 28,000 cases and an incidence equal to 23.8% of the total. This was certainly affected by the fact that vaccination, with the exception of health workers, teachers and frail subjects, was distributed on the basis of personal criteria, that is, starting with the oldest subjects. Now, however, the focus is on the younger ones.
