The Tomorrow War: Allegedly a successor already planned

The Tomorrow War

The original plan was for The Tomorrow War to hit theaters on December 25, 2020. Obviously nothing came of it. Like many other films, the apocalypse action fell victim to the global pandemic and had to be postponed. Instead of the big screen, The Tomorrow War started on July 2nd on Amazon Prime. Despite some criticism, the film was quite successful. So it's no wonder that there are already rumors about a successor.

Rumors of a successor

At least if you can believe the words of Anthony D'Alessandro. He is Editorial Director and Box Office Editor at the film magazine Deadline and claims to have heard that Amazon and producer Skydance are already in talks for a successor to The Tomorrow War.

"As I understand, think Discussions are taking place to bring the entire creative group back together both in front of and behind the camera; including director Chris McKay, screenwriter Zach Dean, and actors Chris Pratt, Yvonne Strahovski, Betty Gilpin, Sam Richardson, Edwin Hodge and Oscar winner JK Simmons " , writes D'Alessandro in his article.

"Paramount will also be involved in the successor; the studio was originally supposed to be responsible for the release in the cinema," continues D'Alessandro. However, Amazon and Skydance have not yet confirmed the rumors of a successor to The Tomorrow War.

The Tomorrow War: A real box office hit

Despite mediocre reviews from many corners, the action flick starring Chris Pratt was a real hit. After the film landed on Amazon Prime on July 2, it quickly became the number 1 streaming platform. The user ratings on Amazon underline the success of the film: More than 22,000 users rated the film, which resulted in a rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars.

The same applies to the audience figures. Even though Amazon didn't come out with exact data, the third-party provider Samba-TV (an application that reads data from SmartTVs) stated that 2.4 million households in the US had turned on The Tomorrow War over the holiday weekend around July 4th. The film also broke some audience records in other parts of the world, for example in Brazil, India, France, Italy, but also here in Germany.

What is The Tomorrow War about?

On paper, The Tomorrow War is actually your average action sci-fi flick: In 2022, people will be visited by soldiers from the future who tell of an alien attack. To put an end to the attack, some armed people accompany the soldiers from the future and help them in the alien war.

Dan Forester (Chris Pratt), who is actually a biology teacher and Iraq war veteran, is also thrown into the fray . He bravely rushes with his allies into war against the invaders from another planet. How the whole thing ends is of course not to be revealed at this point. You can watch The Tomorrow War for free on Amazon Prime if you are a Prime member.
