The PS5 can fail too

I'm going to have a frankly out-of-the-box chatting here: Purely based on user interests, the PS5 is more relevant to our website than the Xbox Series X.

Krass, isn't it? You wouldn’t have guessed.

Yes, it’s no secret, even with massive delivery problems that are still going on, it is already becoming apparent that, in terms of sales, after the resounding success of the PS4, the PS5 will also be in the this generation of consoles will be ahead of the game again.

So Sony is obviously doing well. And because every story lives from the dramaturgical break, here comes the inevitable: still.

And that's not because of any outside influences or because people might lose interest in the Playstation 5 (buy now). No, what could break Sony's neck, I see as completely homemade: pronounced arrogance.

The sympathetic beginnings

The PS5 can also fail: Sony's arrogance is a problem (3) Source: Sony Let's go back in time, to the year 2006. Sony looked back on the really immensely successful PS2 era. To this day, the device is not only the most successful Playstation console, but also the most successful console of all time.

Why is that? Well, because Sony had done a hell of a lot right. With the PS1, they entered the console business, had also included a powerful CD player and geared themselves heavily to player and customer requirements: cheap data carriers with a lot of storage space, a slightly more adult orientation compared to Nintendo, gaming as a lifestyle instead of just a toy , an affordable purchase price. Remember the legendary "press conference" when the price of the PS1 was revealed compared to the much more expensive Sega Saturn. The success proved Sony right, the PS1 was already a huge bestseller.

This path was continued with the PS2, now with more powerful technology, an integrated, affordable DVD player and otherwise simply a continuation of what made the PS1 so popular.

Arrogance comes before the fall

The PS5 can also fail: Sony's arrogance is a problem (6) Source: Sony So now they had a golden hand twice in a row. But oh, hubris! The PS3 was on, and Sony radiated with every fiber: We are the coolest.

It was apparently seen as a sure thing that they would again be the market leader. So they created a console that was technically strong, but for which it was a disaster to develop due to the complex hardware structure, put a completely excessive purchase price on it and put the device on the shelves according to the motto "eat or die".

Well, quite a large group of players decided not to play this game. Right at the beginning, the PS3 was pretty leaden on the shelves. Instead, the Xbox 360, the new, hitherto rather ridiculed competitor, flourished. The first Xbox had nothing to say either, so why should the successor have been taken seriously! Likewise, the fact that it had gained a decent lead thanks to a significantly earlier release.

Towards the end of the life cycle of this generation of consoles, the PS3 barely overtook the Xbox 360, but with just over 80 million sales it was still miles away from the PS1 (over 100 million sales) and especially the PS2 (over 155 million sales). And Nintendo's Wii happily passed the competition with over 100 million units sold.

Get up, dust off, carry on

The PS5 can also fail: Sony's arrogance is a problem (5) Source: PC Games Hardware So in the PS3 years you had a lot of time to think. And it showed: with the PS4 they wanted to win back the goodwill of the people, which also worked wonderfully. Low price, no online compulsion, a focus on games and nothing else.

That worked so well, of course, mainly because the Xbox makers' relative success of the Xbox 360, like Sony at one time, had gone to the head of the Xbox makers . Kinect compulsory, no used games, 100 euros more purchase price than the PS4, mandatory online connection with the announcement that those who would not have one should continue to play Xbox 360 - uff.

As once at the PS1 accepted this penalty with thanks to Sony, especially a little mocking video about used games on the PS4 went around the world.

And also from developer circles you heard that Sony was trying to fulfill more wishes here. Above all, the very simple hardware structure of the console was a relevant factor here. Behind the scenes there must have been problems even here back then, if you listen to current reports.

But in principle the Playstation manufacturer, decried as an arrogant ass company at the time of PS3, was now the "good guy" again, and This was again evident in the sales figures. The PS2 will probably remain inaccessible, but with around 120 million units currently sold - exact figures on the current status are not yet available - we are not infinitely far away from it.

Keep going?

The PS5 can also fail: Sony's arrogance is a problem (7) Source: Sony Well, and now the PS5. A great success without any question, but you can tell: The attitude of yore is back. It wasn't completely gone in the PS4 era either, but was at least more cleverly concealed there.

Eternal defense against crossplay, messing around with downward compatibility, half-truths about the exclusivity of games - and apparently a really bad deal with small ones Developers. Sony sees itself as a manufacturer of a console for premium games, and everything that does not meet this requirement profile is a nice appendix, negligible.

Again, the maxim seems to apply: We do not orientate ourselves on the wishes of our buyers, but they have to align their wishes with us - and to be grateful. The promotion in August 2020, when desperate gamers who wanted a PS5, could apply for the chance of a pre-order, which was then granted to them or not, will not be forgotten. They were then awarded to "particularly loyal" Sony fans.

So at Sony's grace you could apply to deduct 500 euros from Sony, but only if you found Sony really, really, really great. How wonderful!

We'll take care of the future tomorrow

The PS5 can also fail: Sony's arrogance is a problem (8) Source: Microsoft Sometime this behavior will fall on its head, I'm sure. Not just because sooner or later people will have enough of it. It takes time, but at some point even the best reputation is ruined - sometimes it happens very quickly, see CD Projekt Red and the Cyberpunk 2077 Debacle.

But that's not the only reason. Sony is sitting in the bed made by the market leader and is feeling good, it doesn't seem as if one has too much desire to change something in one's own strategy.

Admittedly, the world continues to turn. And even if game streaming will not come and become standard as quickly as Google Stadia in particular wanted us to believe, classic console gaming still has an expiration date.

Sony is poking around a bit potential future technologies around, of course, see PS Now. Meanwhile, Microsoft in particular is playing much more skillfully for time. The Xbox One debacle had a long lasting effect, but with almost every decision made by the Redmond-based company, careful attention is paid to ensure that it is as customer-friendly as possible.

The Xbox plays absolutely every Xbox game every Xbox Console ever, the skillful double game with console and PC has massively expanded the target group, even the greatest Xbox critics cannot deny that the Game Pass is simply really a damn good deal.

On top of that xCloud, a streaming service that is already doing a lot better than most of the competition, the perhaps not customer-friendly, but strategically very important building of an impressive studio portfolio, and above all the fact that Xbox is already much more than a brand than Service because it is sold as a single device with games running.

The long game

The PS5 can also fail: Sony's arrogance is a problem (10) Source: Wed crosoft All of that was not enough to push the Xbox Series X relevantly. And even if I'm sure that Microsoft would of course have liked to see market leadership here, this fact should be secondary for the company. The group has enough money in hand to accept losses in the gaming sector over the years, and meanwhile, through all the steps mentioned, you are preparing so that you will not be significantly better positioned in the near, but foreseeable future probably as Sony.

Who knows if there will ever be a PS6, let alone a PS7. How Sony will act then, how relevant the Playstation brand will then still be, remains to be seen, because it doesn't seem as if the company is really building ahead. Meanwhile, Microsoft can look to a solid foundation on which the Xbox future will be built.

Would have been, would be the market leader chain

Had the Xbox One been a great success, the PS4 might even have been beaten, then the situation would look a lot different, I am convinced of that. Microsoft had to do a plumbing, and now they're looking good after the repairs. Sony, on the other hand, lies in bed in their own house on the first floor and does not notice or ignore how the pipes burst down in the basement and the water rises higher and higher.
