New World: Caution - the MMORPG supposedly destroys your RTX 3090
New World
It was only recently that the closed beta of the online role-playing game New World started. This not only triggered a huge rush of gamers and the Twitch hype, but also seems to cause severe hardware problems for some users. Currently there are increasing reports of destroyed graphics cards in connection with the MMO from Amazon Game Studios. As can be read at Reddit.com, graphics cards from the RTX 3090 series seem to be particularly affected. Player reports range from numerous crashes to complete destruction of the map. For example, Twitter user "Gladd" explains:
"Playing the New World beta (buy now € 39.99) completely fried my EVGA 3090. There are many accounts where the same thing happens with the same Game happens. I just want to make sure it doesn't happen to others too. "

Initial speculations assume that these hardware problems are related to the New World menu, which enables an unrestricted frame rate. Usually something like this just causes the GPU to get hotter and thus the cooling fan to spin faster. In connection with New World, however, this seems to cross some line. So far there is no solution to the problem.
What do the developers say?
In the meantime, Amazon Game Studios has spoken to Windows Central about the problem and tried to look at the whole thing in a more differentiated way. However, they are probably working on a fix at the same time."Hundreds and thousands of players played the New World Closed Beta yesterday and spent several million hours doing it. We have a few reports of high-performance hardware failures -Graphics cards received while in use in New World. (...) We haven't seen any evidence of major issues with the 3090s - either in beta or during our many months of alpha testing. It is certain to be New World beta To give players extra peace of mind, we're going to add a patch today that will limit the frame rate in our menu screen. "
What are your experiences in this regard? Did you also have hardware problems in connection with the New World closed beta? Write it in the comments!

Playing ‘New World’? Here’s Amazon’s Fix For 100% GPU Usage And Potential Damage
New World
AmazonUpcoming MMO New World raised a few eyebrows this week for the wrong reasons. A number of beta players using EVGA 3090 FTW3s have had their entire GPUs bricked while playing New World, which Amazon says is “safe to play,” but they have now issued guidance for something they think might help with this issue.
It’s not just this card, many players have noticed that the game shoots up to 100% GPU usage in odd times, like being in a menu or waiting in queue to get in. Even if their cards are not fried, an issue Amazon says is “not widespread,” it’s concerning.
Here’s Amazon’s fix for this issue, as per their current analysis of the situation:
“Thank you all for sharing your reports about this problem, we believe this is related with driver settings and frame rate limiters.
Disable the overrides in the driver settings,
This will help prevent issues with the GPU’s utilization.
Go to Settings > Visuals > Max fps > Set this to 60, this should help to bring the utilization back down.
Additionally, please be sure to check in your NVIDIA Control Panel under Manage 3D Settings > Program Settings > Select New World, and check that Max Frame Rate either shows 'Use Global Settings (Off) or just Off.”
So, they’re citing driver settings and as many suspected, frame rate limiters, where one potential issue was totally uncapped frames in menus spiking GPUs, an old Starcraft problem, if memory serves.
Regardless of the card you’re using it would probably be wise to take these steps. Even if it’s only 3090s that seem to be suffering literal damage from this, ultra-high GPU usage for no reason is not really something you want to see regardless, and these steps should help bring it back down.
New World continues to enjoy a highly watched beta launch period, dominating on Twitch most of the time as players mess around in early zones of the game. The long-gestating MMO from Amazon is a big deal for the company, which has struggled to put out a high quality release since it started making games, but New World, technical issues aside, seems to be relatively well received by gamers and MMOs fans in particular so far.
More to come on potential tech issues, but hopefully this current issue may be helped by these steps.
