Apparently M. Night Shyamalan's new film isn't terribly bad

The name M. Night Shyamalan is probably not only known to selected cineastes, after all, the director is known for his extremely wacky mystery films with a trash factor and sometimes more, sometimes less meaningful plot twists. His latest work is titled "Old" and, at least according to the reviews on Metacritic, makes it to number 3 of his last ten films. So is M. Night Shyamalan's new film not as bad as feared?

Is there a solid mystery thriller with an entertainment factor behind "Old"?

Admittedly: With a Metascore of 53, "Old" is still far from being a cinematic masterpiece. But if you compare him to M. Night Shyamalan's previous work, "Old" is definitely one of his better films. From his last ten productions only "The Visit" (55), "Signs" (59) and "Split" (62) do better. There can be no question of a clear lead here and so Old does not seem to be a failure, at least by Shyamalan standards.

Who does not M. Night Shyamalan for his often trashy mystery cucumbers like "The Happening" (34), "The Village" (44) or "Lady in the Water" (36) should at least be familiar with the catastrophic real film adaptation of the celebrated cartoon series Avatar. "The Last Airbender" is just bobbing around with a metascore of 20.

With "Old" the controversial director seems to have at least succeeded in delivering a mystery thriller with an entertainment factor. The film is about a family who had actually only planned a nice vacation in the tropics. However, when they notice on the beach that they are aging rapidly and their life is reduced to a single day, a struggle for survival begins. If you are old enough (FSK from 16 years) and are not afraid of gray hair, you can enjoy "Old" on the big screen from Thursday, July 29th.
