NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti and 3070 Ti: Specs, Pricing and Games Announced at Computex 2021

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti and 3070 Ti

NVIDIA took advantage of the online conference of this digital Computex 2021 to present two new models of the GeForce RTX 3000 series. The secret hasn't been the secret for a while and the announcement simply confirmed most of the rumors about two cards that are decidedly different, in terms of performance, from each other.

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Looks closely at the RTX 3090, excluding a handful of CUDA cores and half the memory, thus targeting enthusiast gamers who don't need 24GB of VRAM; while the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti barely detaches itself from the RTX 3070, resulting in almost an upgrade that doesn't even come close to the power of its big sister. Below, all the specifications, prices and games announced for the new NVIDIA GeForce RTX.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti

Available starting June 3, the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti has the clear goal of providing a gaming alternative to the GeForce RTX 3090, the flagship of the new series of NVIDIA GPUs that with its 24 GB of memory looks more to the professional sector. It is no coincidence that the new model was presented just as the top-of-the-range solution for gaming, despite the drop to 12 GB of memory which in any case should be more than enough for 4K gaming in the near future, thanks also to the optimizations in this sense of the Ampere architecture.

The advantage of the memory cut is a lower price, albeit still high with 1199 dollars which is 200 more than those mentioned by the first rumors. But they are undoubtedly fewer than those that await us from custom, destined to arrive on the market already burdened by mammoth price increases. We are also talking about in-game performance from RTX 3090 given the 10240 CUDA cores which are just 250 less than those of the older sister. The count of streaming processors was not made official during the conference, but the number is consistent with the 34 TFLOP of the card's computing power, against the 35.58 of the RTX 3090, and has been confirmed in these hours with the arrival of the first information on the custom models of the new GeForce.

The custom models have also given us confirmation of the base frequency of 1,365 MHz and a boost of 1,665 MHz, the same that we should find on the Founders Edition. This once again stands out in terms of power supply as evidenced by the Computex 2021 images showing a single proprietary NVIDIA 12-pin connector, presumably to be connected to 2 classic 8-pin connectors in the case of the Founders Edition. Furthermore, the dissipation system remains the same, already seen on the top models of the GeForce RTX 3000 and designed to improve the airflow of the entire system and not just the card. We are curious to see it at work in this case, given the size of the card that seems more similar to an RTX 3080. We can assume that in the meantime NVIDIA has worked on the optimization in order to guarantee temperatures and noise in line with the other models.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti

The GeForce RTX 3070 Ti, available starting June 10, stays at a safe distance from the RTX 3080, staying quite close to the RTX 3070. We are around 10% more performance, with 22 TFLOPs against 20.3 of the base model, which depend not only on a slight increase in CUDA cores, according to rumors 6144, but also on the use of faster GDDR6X memory instead of GDDR6. standard. We are also talking about a handful of more specialized cores that should help with ray tracing and DLSS.

Nonetheless we expect that in the case of non-OC models an 8-pin auxiliary connector is sufficient and we expect a improvement for cooling. The RTX 3070 Ti passes in fact to the same dissipation of the flagship models of the series, abandoning the classic double front fan of the GeForce RTX 3070. And this is probably why we are facing a net increase given the price of 599 dollars, 100 dollars higher than that of the RTX 3070 and less convenient in absolute terms, given the 20% increase for a card that, as we said, promises a 10% performance increase.

But the superior dissipation makes this model a luxury alternative to what is, perhaps also for reasons of availability, the best-selling GPU of the GeForce RTX 3000 series. And it is a factor capable of making sense of a card that certainly does not change the balance of the series, although an instant depletion of stocks is still foreseeable given the high demand and the fact that the launch price of the Founders Edition is destined to be decidedly lower even than that of the cheaper custom, destined to arrive on the market with an extremely inflated price compared to the recommended one.

Ray tracing arrives on DOOM Eternal (and beyond)

The Nvidia conference of Computex, enclosed in a pre-recorded one-hour video, it reserved a lot of space for artificial intelligence and supercomputing and accelerated computing services, but for the first half it focused on gaming starting with the announcement of the implementation of RTX technologies in the still not published Dying: 1983 and ICARUS: First Cohort, as well as in DOOM Eternal, shown in a long trailer that, at least in situations where reflective surfaces abound, unequivocally highlights the spectacular effect of ray tracing on the massive lighting of the game.

In addition, NVIDIA, after announcing the availability in beta of the already announced Omniverse Machinima, has revealed the arrival of DLSS in Rainbow Six Siege, thus guaranteeing a useful FPS boost to those who own a GeForce of the last two generations , and in Red Dead Redemption 2, a decidedly heavy title that should finally be able to run at the maximum even on mid-range configurations thanks to the advanced upscaling based on deep learning. The latter is not necessarily bound to ray tracing and can simply be used to increase performance as already seen with Death Stranding, Mechwarrior 5, No Man's Sky and so on.

We talk about reducing, in in this case the input milliseconds, with Reflex technology that, arriving on 10 other games, optimizes the work of the GPU in order to avoid bottlenecks related to the rendering queue, while aiming for the maximum possible framerate. It is thus useful for avoiding spikes in latency that can alter player perception and performance in competitive titles that rely on reaction times of a few tens of milliseconds.
