Total War: Rome Remastered in the test - this is how it works!
Total War
Support of ultrawide monitors and native UHD resolution with 4K optimization, if you download the optional graphics package: The porting professionals from Feral Interactive (see box) have done a great job with the visual modernization of the classic round-robin strategy Rome: Total War. The first real 3D-Total-War of the tactical tinkerer from Creative Assembly, which is now very old in terms of graphics and game mechanics, still has a loyal fan base and, thanks to the active modding scene, survived the time after its appearance almost 17 years ago. A success story in the community of strategy players that the successor Total War: Rome 2 cannot show to this extent.Table of contents

But a new texture coating, a handful of new factions and some very useful "Quality of Life" improvements - including a pleasantly tidy user interface with chic icons - are enough to ensure that old and new strategy fans can enjoy the long journey make world domination? Especially since with the excursions into the fantasy realm (Total War: Warhammer), Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia and Troy, Total War: Three Kingdoms or the extremely powerful Total War: Attila there are actually enough current games of the series available with the corresponding Optics as well as complex structures and game mechanics come up.03:13

Fresh tutorial for beginners
Sometimes the word is more helpful than that Sword: Diplomacy is much more important in Total War: Rome Remastered. Source: PC Games Beginners are difficult for newcomers to the strategy genre. Sometimes so difficult that one or the other may surrender to the abundance of mechanics and menu structures before it "clicks" and enthusiasm gains the upper hand. Fortunately, this was also clear to the developers, who provided Total War: Rome Remastered with new tool tips, informative advisors, an extensive wiki and, above all, a new, extremely beginner-friendly tutorial. In a crisp mini-scenario, you get the essential cornerstones for a successful campaign presented in bits and pieces. The introduction is also ideal for old Total War buffs who have taken a longer break from playing and want to brush up their knowledge quickly.A port of Rome: Total War was released in 2016 for the iPad and in 2018 for iPhone and Android devices. Source: Sega After a brief overview of the possibilities of the revised camera, which finally allows map rotation and can zoom even further into the action during the battles, the first Senate mission for the Julier faction is about to begin. For the glory of the growing empire, you are to attack the nearby village of Segasta and defeat the local rebels. You have ten rounds for this - more than enough for the first little skirmish. Your General Flavius Julius will be guided step by step through troop deployments, various siege options and the first tactical battles. In a nutshell: Make extensive use of the archers from a safe distance, secure them with your triars from attacking enemies, fall into the flanks of the weakened enemy with the cavalry and then set out with the Hastati infantry to the final fatal blow.
Advisors, tool tips and new overlays
You wanted to be able to play all races in Total War: Rome Remastered and the Barbarian Invasion expansion right from the start? A tick in the advanced settings is sufficient. Source: PC Games It won't be that easy on the campaigns of conquest of course. But if you heed the learned basics, many a quick victory will beckon you. A problem, especially in the later mass battles, remains artificial intelligence, which, as is typical of Total War, repeatedly fluctuates between surprisingly clever, extremely aggressive, stupid as bread or even suicidal. This is followed by brief instructions on the construction of buildings, the recruiting of new units, the perils of diplomacy and the sending of spies who sneak funny animated steps into other cities. For a short battle in between you stand in the The main game and the expansions offer exciting historical battles as well as your own and fast battles. Source: PC Games The completely redesigned campaign map proves to be useful, offering a variety of overlays at the click of a mouse and providing information at a glance, for example, about the spread of the factions or any kind of fortifications in the known world. The virtual consultants take you by the hand in an easy-to-understand manner and explain every single click in the menu until the basic framework for a successful campaign is in place. The newly renovated user interface, equipped with modern icons and detailed tool tips, lets you forget the occasional menu chaos of the original. Optionally, you can now play a few more rounds with the Julier house. Do you feel fit enough? Then your own campaign will start with your desired faction.
All races playable from the start
As stylish as the campaign map has been revised, details are missing in the empty landscapes during the battles. Source: PC Games At the beginning of the Imperial Campaign, only 3 out of 19 factions are available. If you don't want to start the path of conquest with the Julier, Bruti or Scipions family, all factions can be unlocked immediately without having to meet certain conditions in a campaign - usually the victory over a people. All it takes is to select the advanced options on the start screen via which Total War: Rome Remastered is called up and to activate the "Unlock all pages of the base game" checkbox. In the original from 2004 this was even more complicated and manual changes had to be made to a file in the program directory. It's a lot easier if you want to start the game as a Spaniard, Thracian or Numid. Incidentally, this also applies to the expansion Barbarian Invasion, which immediately gives you direct selection from all 18 races - for example Alemanni, Lombards, Ostrogoths or Burgundians send. It's not that easy to keep track of the hustle and bustle ... Source: PC Games Before you start: With a click on the gear icon in the top right corner, you call up the modifiers in the main menu that you can use to determine whether you want the Want to use Classic or Remastered settings. If you choose "Classic" in all sections, you will miss out on some exciting game mechanics, for example the new agent type Merchant, who will serve you well. If you recruit traders on markets and send them out into the wide world, the exchange of goods between far-flung settlements will flourish much better and your state purse will fill up faster with funds urgently needed for expansion.Even if Feral Interactive uses the well-known mechanics of the original only in homeopathic doses and has added something here and there: You shouldn't miss the addition of night battles in the main game as well as clearly noticeable improvements and expanded options for action in the important area of diplomacy. A permanent alliance with a strong opponent leaves more scope for your thirst for conquest than an exhausting multi-front war. However, the alliances are often on shaky ground, and many pacts are abruptly broken. So a watchful eye on your diplomats is a must!
Quick battles and cross-platform PvP
If you have little time and don't want to immerse yourself in the Imperial Campaign for hours, then the main menu is Quick Battle , Historical battle or Your own battle, there are plenty of opportunities for the quick slaughter in between. For example, you've always wanted to understand the historically documented battle in the Teutoburg Forest and fight against AI-controlled Teutons with the House of Scipions? With one click of the mouse you can get started right away and test your strategies for a huge victory.
If you prefer the classic style, you can use the modifiers to deactivate all or part of the remaster's changes before starting the game. Source: PC Games The bad news first: No, the campaign cannot (yet?) Be contested cooperatively. In our opinion, a feature that should definitely have been included. But if you want to compete with other people in battles, this is now also possible across platforms for the first time. Whether your opponents for rule now own Total War: Rome Remastered in the Windows, MacOS or Linux version, it doesn't matter and you can look forward to exciting multiplayer matches.
Strong ones Presentation
If you prefer to attack under cover of darkness, you will be pleased that night battles are now also possible in the main game. Source: PC Games Even if you don't have to download the 30 GB Enhanced Graphics Pack for lack of a 4K monitor, the visual changes can be seen immediately. A higher resolution, richer colors, three-dimensional campaign map, chic environmental details such as dust clouds and heat shimmer as well as a lot of revised textures for buildings, objects and units make the remaster shine in new splendor. However, the revision is not quite as consistent as it seems at first glance: If you zoom in closer to your troops and a battlefield, you see poorly detailed, wooden soldiers and a mostly empty environment that consists of little more than a few buildings , rudimentary fauna and many monochrome areas. But we don't want to be too harsh with the makers. The revision has largely succeeded and the lack of detail in the battles is partly due to the fortunately significantly increased number of troops that you send into the bustling mass brawls. What we might have wished for, just for the sake of the not inconsiderable nostalgia factor, would be to switch between the original graphics and the refurbished version. That worked well for us on Halo and Starcraft Remastered and could possibly be added in an upcoming update. Feral Interactive, do you hear us?
Impressive scope, fair price
Developer Creative Assembly and publisher Sega have put together an attractive and very extensive package. In addition to the main game Totwal War: Rome Remastered, the two expansions Barbarin Invasion and Alexander are also included in a revised remastered version. Newcomers also get access to the Rome: Total War Collection for Windows to complete the Roman strategy package. The price is 29.99 euros, owners of Rome: Total War in their Steam library will get a 50 percent discount until June 1st and pay only 14.99 euros. That's a fair offer. My Opinion
By Ulrich WimmerothAuthor The best version of Rome: Total War you can get Admittedly, I have Total Was: Rome Remastered launched on Steam with some anticipation. Even after the very first rounds, I was nostalgically glorified and listened to the still fantastic soundtrack and pushed my troops over the visually neatly polished map. It was like seeing a good friend again who had almost been forgotten, but immediately reconnected with the old gang and chatted and had fun all night. Yes, the old AI problems are still there and under the modern paint a 17-year-old game mechanics are working on, which quickly causes a bit of disillusion among fans. But the fascination was there again immediately and I forgot everything around me on my way to lead the Bruti family from battle to battle. The Rome Remaster is definitely worthwhile for old and new PC strategists, especially in the lush overall package with the two, also competently revised, extensions. Even if the newer Total War games offer a more complex campaign design and vastly improved AI. Total War: Rome Remastered (PC) 8/10
Graphics - Sound - Multiplayer - Pros & Cons Chic optics with 4K and ultrawide support Modernized interface Significant "Quality of Life" improvements Full mod support More atmospheric Soundtrack All factions freely available at the beginning Extensions include Barbarian Invasion and Alexander Long loading and waiting times The AI is very unbalanced More pros & cons ... Conclusion Nice new edition that captures the spirit of the original
