The shortage of semiconductors impacts the production of the car manufacturer, which estimates a drop of 190 thousand units in the first three months of the year
Good Jeep Compass made in Melfi The global crisis of chips, whose production is for the 91% concentrated in Asia, it also affects Italy, with repercussions on the pace of work in the automotive industry. The more than 7,000 workers at the Stellantis plant in Melfi are on layoffs for a week from the other day, while the management from Amsterdam denounces the production difficulties in its quarterly report, the first after the January merger between the Peugeot and Fiat Chrysler groups. The text documents "losses of approximately 11% (190 thousand units) of scheduled production in the first quarter of 2021 due to the shortage of semiconductors".The new entity, led by President John Elkann and CEO Carlos Tavares, reports "strong net revenues" between January and March, equal to 34.3 billion euros (+ 14%) and 1, 6 million units delivered overall (+ 12%), positioning itself as a “market leader” in Europe. This is due, according to financial manager Richard Palmer, to a “diversified portfolio of brands that drove the growth in volumes, a positive price effect and an improvement in the product mix, despite the difficulties due to the shortage of semiconductors at a global level”.
The effects of this phenomenon in the current year, however, remain "limited visibility" explains the company, "with the expectation of a second quarter of 2021 more impacted than the first and with improvements in the second half". In the meantime, dealers see their stock decrease by about 22 thousand units compared to the end of 2020, with a widespread decline in all geographic areas (1.2 million cars on display). The widespread increase in deliveries would therefore be the result of a "robust demand", "customer mix" and the impact of the suspension of production a year ago due to Covid. North America alone records a decline of 4%.
Meanwhile, in Melfi, where Jeeps and Fiat 500Xs are produced, workers are waiting to be able toa> return to work. The Lucanian plant increased the units produced in the first three months compared to a year ago by 28% (almost 64 thousand in total), but 1,500 workers have been in cig rotation since September 2018, after the Fiat Punto production shutdown.
