Returnal: A new patch can destroy saved games

Returnal

Returnal: Earlier this week we reported on some bugs and crashes that have caused frustration for many players. The developers were aware of the errors and wanted to fix them as soon as possible. A small jump in time to May 5th and the developers delivered a patch that addresses some of the problems:

Fixed a bug where certain trophies were not unlocked correctly. Missing trophies have to be unlocked again. Multiple stability improvements and fixes some special crashes. Fixed a bug with pre-order suits that prevented items from being picked up and doors being opened. Resting in Helios now heals the player as intended. The number of scout corpses has been increased. Bugs with custom controls have been fixed. Numerous other minor bug fixes and improvements. Recommended editorial content At this point you will find external content from [PLATTFORM]. Not yet the long-awaited memory function, but this patch deals with almost all other problems that players have encountered in Returnal. Unfortunately, with Patch 1.3.3, a bug was added to the game that could render the roguelite shooter's game state unusable.

'Returnal' patch fixes the save-breaking issue from yesterday's update

Housemarque wasn't kidding when it said it would have a patch for Returnal's save file bug within 'a few hours.' The studio has released Patch 1.3.4 for its PS5 title to revert to the safer 1.3.1 code while also fixing a keyboard exploit and a known Trophies problem. A proper 1.3.5 patch is coming soon, Housemarque said. However, whether or not your earlier saved games survived the flawed 1.3.3 patch is another matter.

If your saves maintained their file size after 1.3.3, you can resume progress even though they were likely corrupted. If they were reduced to 0KB, however, you'll have to resort to a PlayStation Plus cloud backup should you have one available. And if you don't... well, true to the game's loop-based mechanics, you'll have to start again.

The botched 1.3.3 update slightly tarnishes a launch for a game that's otherwise quite promising. Until now, the biggest frustration with Returnal was its brutal difficulty — and if all goes well, that will be your only consideration going forward.
