Proof, Mazda MX-30: Kodo design and electric philosophy
Proof, Mazda MX-30
Mazda has always produced original cars with great personality. Qualities that will also affect the next generation of vehicles, which will be electric. The first application of zero-emission mobility is the MX-30: a model that anticipates, in part, Mazda's ambitions and strategies to face the change, with a "surprise".The Japanese technicians have wondered which was the right size to produce an electric car that was truly sustainable both in production and in use on the road, and they found an answer: 35.5 kWh. This is the value of the lithium-ion battery, which according to Mazda represents the right compromise to respect the environment, not only when driving, but also during production and disposal.
At Mazda, you know, they always do things "their own way", so also MX-30 interprets the well-known Kodo design: a philosophy rather than a stylistic course. Solid, concrete and simple, it stands out, without ever being too sophisticated or refined; it is the cleanliness of the image and dominating and creating an immediate understanding with the motorist. There is, however, no shortage of breaking elements such as the folding doors (not very comfortable to tell the truth ..) and the roof with a coupé pattern. A detail that adds greater elegance.
The interior is made with great care and attention: the coverings are of high quality and the organization of the space is very rational and ergonomic. Here too, a more practical and functional configuration was chosen, giving up aesthetic virtuosity and surprising technological additions. The on-board entertainment system is also convincing, the same as found on recent Mazdas.
The screen has clearly legible graphics and the navigation between the menus takes place with a rotor placed behind the gearbox, easy to reach even while driving without getting distracted. Rich in content, smartphone integration with Apple Car Play and Android Auto programs is also available. Mazda has chosen an ergonomic approach, keeping numerous physical keys, which remain the most rational and comfortable choice.
From a technical point of view, the structure developed by Mazda is called Skyactiv Vehicle Architecture: the batteries are made by Panasonic with a voltage of 355 V. The capacity is only 35.5 kWh, few compared to the competition, but we have previously explained the choice of Mazda. The latter powers a 146 hp synchronous electric motor for 270 Nm of torque. If loaded, the Mazda MX-30 can travel a maximum of just over 200 km: a value even here below the competition in the same segment, justified (in part) by a courageous choice of sustainability.
Driving, Mazda MX-30 convinces for comfort and smoothness of travel: the seats are extremely comfortable and you travel in a well-finished and welcoming environment. The Japanese electric vehicle is versatile due to its abundant interior space and the brilliance given by the instant torque delivery. The steering is smooth and very precise, which allows for great handling. Excellent suspension calibration: roughness, holes, uncertainties of the asphalt are overcome with great effectiveness without ever unloading the impact on the back of the occupants.
The driving position is raised and offers excellent visibility: yes they are able to evaluate dimensions and external obstacles with good attention. Behind the intervention of the cameras it is essential: the coupé pattern of the roof significantly limits visibility. During the test, an autonomy in the mixed cycle emerged which, depending on the use, touches or slightly exceeds 200 km. On the motorway, very unfavorable territory, the soundproofing is really very good and the smoothness of travel is a reference.
Charging is supported both in alternating current and in direct current: in the first case, the limit is 6, 6 kW, while connecting the car to a rapid column the theoretical maximum power is 50 kW. Here too, the values are certainly not among the best in the segment and tend to make precise planning necessary for a possible trip, also given the reduced autonomy. The Mazda MX-30 price list starts at 34,900 euros
