The pharmaceutical company released a press release stating that after two doses the vaccine's effectiveness is 100% and that the side effects are no different from those experienced by adults. With these data - we read - he plans to apply to the Food and Drug Administration (Fda) for the authorization for emergency use in early June.

Moderna's announcement refers to the results of the TeenCove study (not very large) on 3,732 adolescents between 12 and 17 years, who were divided into two groups to estimate the effects of the vaccine at mRna. Two thirds of the boys were randomly assigned to the vaccinated group, while the others were given a placebo. immune reactions, in line with those ascertained for adults: this is the case for the researchers who carried out the tests.

Furthermore, the vaccine is considered safe, since the side effects recorded are not dissimilar to those that emerged for adults and are classified as mild to moderate: arm pain, headache, fatigue, myalgia, chills.

The calculation of efficacy was not the primary objective of the trial, the company acknowledges, which however reports not having found any cases of Covid-19 among the adolescents vaccinated 14 days after the second dose, while in the control group there were 4 cases. In short, 100% effectiveness in preventing disease.

If, on the other hand, a single administration is considered and mild infections are sought, according to the definition of the Cdc, the rate is 93%. "Particularly exciting," added Moderna CEO Stephane Bancel, "is to see that the vaccine can prevent Sars-Cov-2 infection." Positive results, which encourage the request for emergency use in adolescents to be submitted to the FDA and other global regulatory bodies as early as early June.
