How much was spent on gaming and betting in Italy during the pandemic

A municipality by municipality map, based on data from the Monopoly Agency, shows a drop in spending in the first half of 2020: from 11 to 6.8 billion

(photo: Bruno / Germany from Pixabay) The pandemic paved the way for illegal online gambling. Thanks to a report received on the WiredLeaks platform, designed to send information to the editorial staff anonymously and securely, Wired demonstrated the functioning of clandestine gambling dens organized on apps that do not have the qualifications to operate in Italy. But what happened to the legal game during the lockdown? The numbers speak of a 38.5% contraction in deposits, for a sum equal to 4.2 billion euros.

To measure the impact on the sector of the pandemic from Sars-Cov-2, Wired si is addressed to the Customs and Monopolies Agency, from which it obtained the data relating to the collection, on a municipal basis, of the first half of 2020 and of the same period of the previous year. Numbers represented on this map.

body.isDesktop .tableauPlaceholder {height: auto! Important;} body.isDesktop .tableauWrapper iframe {height: auto! Important ;;}. TableauWrapper> p {line-height: 0 ; margin: 0! important;} The overwhelming majority of the municipalities in red saw a decrease in the money spent on legal gambling, while those in black saw an increase. The filters in the lower part allow you to narrow the map on the territory of a single region or a single province.

Those in gray, on the other hand, are the approximately 3,300 municipalities for which no data is available. Or rather, those for which the data are completely missing or are available only for one of the two periods taken into consideration. The total figures calculated by Wired do not take into account the collection made in these municipalities.

As can be seen, the decline is generalized. After all, the arcades remained closed from the start of the first lockdown, on March 9, 2020, to mid-June. The only exceptions in Lazio and in the autonomous province of Bolzano, which confirmed the stop until July. Furthermore, in South Tyrol, a new ordinance requires the presentation of the green pass to access the gaming and betting rooms.

The stop to mobility has also had an impact, albeit to a lesser extent. In the first half of 2020 in the capital municipalities or with a population of more than 50 thousand inhabitants, that is, those that are likely to attract the largest share of workers residing in other municipalities, the reduction in collection was equal to 40.9%, two and a half points above the national average. While in the other realities the contraction was 35.7%, almost three points below the national average.

In absolute numbers, we have gone from a collection of 11 billion euros, recorded in the first semester of 2019, to 6.8 billion in the same period last year. How many of these 4.2 billion missing from the appeal have been diverted to the illegal online gaming that Wired reported thanks to an anonymous report on the WiredLeaks platform, it is impossible to say.

We must not forget that this sum does reference only to the first part of the year. According to data from Agipronews, a news agency specializing in gambling issues, on an annual basis the decline in wagers was close to 7 billion euros. The same agency reports a 39% increase in the spending of online gaming, the legal one, for a total value of 2.5 billion. Meanwhile, the reopening decree has established that from 1 July, in the yellow zone, gaming rooms, betting rooms, bingo and casinos will be able to reopen. In a few months, the numbers will tell whether or not the sector will have returned to pre-pandemic levels.
