GetsuFumaDen: Undying Moon: we interviewed producer Shin Murato

GetsuFumaDen

As we had the opportunity to tell you in the Top 5 Indies of May, GetsuFumaDen: Unfying Moon is certainly one of the most interesting titles among those to keep an eye on in this month of May 2021. On the occasion of the release of the title, we had the opportunity to ask Konami producer Shin Murato a few questions. So here's what emerged in our interview on the title coming May 13 on PC and next year on Nintendo Switch.

A deep and inspired game

GetsuFumaDen: the peculiar artistic style What were the main mythological sources of inspiration for the creation of this new title?

GetsuFumaDen: Undying Moon is an original universe, so there are no mythological sources of inspiration. However, we have referred to the Asian interpretation of hell and Dante's Inferno. But you will notice the true worldview of GetsuFumaDen: Undying Moon by playing it.

Did you start from the same base as in the past or have you tried to insert new elements?

It is important to point out that this title is a new game, not a remastered of the original product, even if it uses Konami's old IP. We kept 2D action for players who liked that title, but other elements are new. We want new fans to enjoy this game as a new IP. However, we took the famous music from the original product and inserted it for the main parts of GetsuFumaDen: Undying Moon. As for the new tracks, however, they add elements that increase the charm of each stage in which they are used. We believe that the sound element is one of the strengths of this title.

GetsuFumaDen: Fast-paced action The game is set 1,000 years after the 1987 original. Will this time frame be narratively covered or will it transition to an entirely new story?

I wouldn't want to comment too much on the story of the new game to avoid spoilers, but I can say that we paid a lot of attention to the narrative of the original game.

The title is a hack & slash roguelite as far as we know. What are the strengths of the gameplay?

Beyond the roguelite elements that will be familiar to players, the title introduces the "Setsuna System" which is based on the spacing / timing of Japanese budo. When the system is done correctly, Japanese kanji appear when attacking enemies.閃 is counterattack, 絶 is parry, 破 is breaking guard, 崩 is breaking, 誅 is execution, 斬 is accumulation of slashes, 壊 is accumulation of blunt blows, 穿 is accumulation of piercing blows and so on. When fighting, players can use two main weapons and two secondary weapons at the same time that can be exchanged for new ones found around the game world. There is a variety of main weapons and weapons, so it will be fun to see players pick up / upgrade various weapons to find the ones they are best at.

GetsuFumaDen: inspiration is not lacking How will character development be managed? Will there be an experience-based skill tree or will the player's growth in mastery with different weapons play an important role?

In this game, the main weapons and secondary weapons are part of a single system but are divided into different types and prove their true worth after unlocking the upgrades in the skill tree. However, players can also improve the skills of the characters. These character building elements are carried over into the various game loops, in order to support players in the roguelite component which is one of the best parts of "GetsuFumaDen: Undying Moon".

We have also included the "Demonization" feature "which rewards the most skilled players. Those who master combat timing and take no damage, quickly killing enemies, will have bonuses. The player character will go through several stages of "demonization", increasing damage production, until one is taken for the first time.
