Apex Legends: Server problems at the start of Season 9

Apex Legends

The start of Season 9 on Tuesday did not go quite as planned for the Respawn Entertainment team. A rush of players brought the shooter's servers to their knees and caused problems for several hours. The developers only had the situation under control after eight hours. Apex Legends can now be played again without any problems.

The update for the season not only brought a new legend into the game with Valkyrie, a brand new mode also made its debut. These are Arenas - a 3-on-3 variant of Apex Legends, in which you have to prevail against the opposing team round after round. You can spend the material you have collected on improvements. Players also start each round with a specified loadout. The Respawn team has also planned its own ranking mode for arenas.

Apex Legends: Legacy Server Issues, Bizarre Bugs Plague Arenas Launch

Apex Legends?

Respawn

Well, yesterday’s Apex Legends Legacy launch, along with Valkyrie and new 3v3 Arenas, seems to have been a little too highly anticipated by players.

All day yesterday, and now into this morning, the game has been plagued with a wide variety of issues preventing many players from playing, or using content they paid for.

Apex Legends has suffered all of the below issues at one point or another since launch yesterday afternoon:

  • Connection issues, as in people just can’t get in to play games.
  • Issues with the marketplace servers, meaning players didn’t have access to currency or previously purchased characters or skins, meaning only default characters to be played.
  • Whatever on earth…these bugs are, that periodically turned Apex into a PS1 game:
  • I’m not sure I’ve ever seen issues with Apex Legends this severe, and it’s not yet clear if this is some sort of new technical problem or simply overwhelming demand like the game has never seen before. It could be the latter, given how anticipated this update was.

This is the last we heard from Respawn late last night as they were spending all day trying to fix things:

Servers do not appear to be universally down for everyone right now, only some players, so you may be able to get in just fine if you try now. But things are still not fully stable across the board, and I would expect some updates from Respawn soon here on coming fixes.

The Arenas mode of Apex, a new permanent addition to the game, is already proving popular, and even in off hours right now, Apex has well over 100,000 people watching games (for those who can get in) on Twitch. It’s only behind mainstays League of Legends and GTA 5, though Apex has been consistently in the top 10 even before this, and has been very healthy for a while.

We’ll keep monitoring the situation. Hopefully you’re able to get in when you want to today, and these issues will continue to die down in time as Respawn gets a handle on things. Stay tuned for updates.
