Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny - Switch Strategy Preview

Disgaea 6

The Disgaea series is quite a niche topic. But maybe this is exactly the niche in which you feel particularly comfortable, you just don't know it yet? In June, the sixth part of the Japanese series appears exclusively for Switch players - the PS4 version is reserved for the Japanese, although the largest fan base outside the Far East also exists on Playstation consoles. But that shouldn't bother us Nintendo gamers any further, so let's talk about the game that surprisingly takes the long way to Europe.

Hellish Ensemble

The Disgaea games are tactical role-playing games, such as Final Fantasy Tactics, Fire Emblem or the recently announced Project Triangle Strategy. You move your characters around on a grid, trying to defeat opponents as efficiently as possible using magic, normal attacks or even crazy skills. From a purely visual point of view, Disgaea 6 is pure Japan: Everything shines in the most colorful colors, the eyes and heads of the figures are often huge, while the rest of the body is small. The weird meta-humor has always been a trademark of the series, in the underworld you can laugh! Underworld? Right, Disgaea traditionally takes place in a kind of hell, populated by demons, overlords, zombies and ... penguins.

A good starting point

The bird mascots are probably the most famous trademark of the series, itself If you don't know Disgaea, you've probably seen a so-called Prinny before. For example in our review of the spin-off Prinny 1/2: Exploded and Reloaded a few months ago. There is more behind these cute fellows than you might think at first: in the form of penguins, the souls of particularly malicious people eke out their lives in hell. In the game, the Prinnys are used as cannon fodder, they are a kind of monster that you can send into battle. The characters Etna and Laharl are also somewhat familiar from the previous games, both will appear in Disgaea 6, but will not take on the main role.

Instead, this time zombie boy Zed and his sister Bieko are in the spotlight. Why exactly the two fight their way through the underworld will only be shown in the English localized European version. The question in a complex game with the number six in the title is of course: Do you have to know the predecessors? No, fortunately the Disgaea games are very good for themselves, and since each part of the series is incredibly extensive, it is almost impossible to completely play through all of its predecessors before the release of Defiance of Destiny.

Definitely over 9,000

Nippon Ichi, the makers of the Disgaea series, love superlatives. The maximum level that your characters can reach in Disgaea 6 is 99,999,999, damage points even reach a quadrillion. It goes without saying that Disgaea is a real size monster. While the main story typically takes about 50 hours, completists can achieve five times as much on the hunt for the maximum level. The fact that many players stick with it and indulge in grinding is due to the complexity of the game principle and to some areas that are generated at random. Compared to other genre colleagues, Disgaea has always been much more complex, but the sixth part of the series will also bring some changes that should make it easier for newbies to get started.

For example, all fighters on the field are now leveling up Completing an area together, a bit like using the EP splitter in the Pokémon series, all warriors benefit from successes, so you don't have one or two super strong fighters on the team while the others stumble helplessly across the field. With simple retry and automatic combat options, Nippon Ichi also wants to prevent frustration and boredom. We won't know whether this will work until the game is ready for testing, but the ideas are definitely welcome. Above all, the acceleration feature should provide comfort in the endgame or in the new game +.

The criticism of the fans

While the feel of the game should otherwise be very similar to that of the predecessor, Disgaea 6 was given an optical makeover. Instead of 2D figures, you now control three-dimensional (anti) heroes across the colorful playing field. Whether you like it is ultimately a matter of taste, the new 3D look doesn't change anything about the comic strips and the generally colorful and crazy design. In Japan, Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny was released in January 2021, both on Switch and on PS4. The ratings in the Far East correspond to those of the predecessor, which means that Disgaea 6 is in a good rating range according to its Japanese colleagues. However, there was also criticism of the scope: "Only" a ridiculous 200 hours are needed to complete the game! Well, then we don't have to take extra time off for the test ... you see, Disgaea fans have high expectations of their favorite tactical role-playing game. In June, when Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny appears exclusively on Nintendo Switch, you will find out whether you too will soon be one of the demon disciples.
