Tesla Model 3 is still the queen of the market in 2020
We already knew this, but the data confirm it more than evidently: the Tesla Model 3 is the best-selling electric car in the world, and the second in the ranking is still a long way off. To bridge the gap between Tesla and other manufacturers, very important investments will be needed.
Tesla Model 3 is in fact the first true electric car sold in large volumes in such a short time, and for the moment it is the unique: this was possible thanks to the large investments made by Tesla, starting from the Gigafactory in Nevada, up to the agreements with Panasonic for the production of specific batteries for the Model 3. The period of start of production, framed between 2017 and 2019 , it was very complicated, but Tesla finally reached the maximum production in the Fremont factory, as well as increasing the production in the Gigafactory in Shanghai over the course of 2020. Thanks to all these important details, the Model 3 has become the queen of the market.
Model Units sold 1 Tesla Model 3 365,240 2 Wuling HongGuang Mini EV 119,225 3 Renault Zoe 100,431 4 Tesla Model Y 79,734 5 Hyundai Kona EV 65,076 As you can see from the tab her, the Model 3 remains in first place with a margin over the second of nearly 250,000 vehicles sold during 2020 alone; furthermore, the second in the ranking, the Wuling HongGuang Mini EV, is basically a low-cost electric microcar, a vehicle absolutely not comparable to the Tesla Model 3. Excellent year for the Renault Zoe, which ranks third with more than 100,000 units sold over the course of 2020; the ranking then proceeds with Model Y, also by Tesla. The Hyundai Kona EV closes the top 5, with just over 65,000 units sold.
According to forecasts, 2021 will see Model Y become the best-selling car, as the production rate is still increasing, with the inclusion of Gigafactories in Texas and Germany, which will help to increase further production. It is also possible that, with Volkswagen's inclusion in the EV market, the ranking of 2021 will be very different from that of 2020, with many new models.
