Whistle on creativity: Dear developers, steal ideas! - column
As the saying goes: "Imitation is the highest form of recognition." Well, a lot is recognized in the world of video games: Hardly has a game been released that made something new and thus was successful, than you can be sure that in the coming years there will be tons of games that will also have the last drop of creativity out of the idea.

Anyone who thinks that this brief classification is now followed by the big outrageous text (because he or she has apparently not read the heading), because the developers are lazy dogs who cannot do anything on their own - no, on the contrary! I think it's good and right that people steal. The idea that games have to constantly rethink themselves and, ideally, their entire genre, is on the one hand illusory and on the other hand not even positive per se.
What did Mario 64 entail? Numerous imitators, and even if Super Mario 64 is still playable today, these classic-inspired titles are often the better games without any question. You don't have to look at something like Super Mario Galaxy, the competition in the form of a Jak & Daxter or even just a Super Lucky's Tale actually works better than the hopping forefather. Yes, even modern open-world adventures are, to a certain extent, imitators of Mario 64 with a view to the Collectathon idea.
Ever since the cornerstones of the video game world have been defined and the various genres have been established, innovation has only existed on a small scale anyway basically without exception it is based on already existing principles and ideas.
So the adoption of ideas is rarely due to sheer laziness. Why shouldn't you look to the best of the best, those who have advanced genres or the game industry? There are rotten apples that simply copy for the sake of copying and which ultimately really do not come out as a cheeky cash grave without a real right to exist, no question about it. Much more often, however, the result of acquiring tried and tested mechanics and designs is a good, sometimes even an outstanding game.
As much as I like the game, but every time I stand on a cliff and get annoyed from the prospect of having to climb down miserably slowly, I wished for the glider from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild; even more, his absence acted like a disruptive factor, which did not change with the continued playing time. In addition to The Witcher 3, Valhalla draws an incredible amount of inspiration from Breath of the Wild, but apparently they made a cut at certain points and said "that's enough with the takeovers".

Instead of simply celebrating the undeniable influences, the developers were obviously afraid to take the final steps here. The glider would not have made Valhalla a copy all at once, but simply made it even more playable in a certain way, at least for me.
In short: please steal more! And we as players shouldn't automatically demonize a supposed lack of innovative strength. Let's pay attention to what great games we got because the developers were willing to take a look at the competition. At least I don't want to miss Dark Souls, Immortals: Fenyx Rising and Jak & Daxter. Oh, and neither for me from Fortnite. Why not that too.

Better to be stolen ...
Whistle on creativity: Dear developers, steal ideas! - Column (3) Source: Nintendo Why are games successful? Ideally, because they are of high quality. But quality in the games industry rarely arises from a flash of inspiration. Of course, sometimes it works pretty damn well on the first try. It is not without reason that Super Mario 64 is still considered a masterpiece to this day, despite the fact that it has carried out daring innovations on so many levels that one could get dim (quite unselfishly I recommend my big retro special on Mario 64 at this point, in which I get to the bottom of exactly these innovations). Last but not least, this is of course also due to the fact that in a world in which there were no blueprints for 3D gaming, it was much easier to implement appropriate innovations. What did Mario 64 entail? Numerous imitators, and even if Super Mario 64 is still playable today, these classic-inspired titles are often the better games without any question. The Battle for Battle Royale
Whistle on creativity: Dear developers, steal ideas! - Column (6) Source: Epic Games More recent example: Fortnite. In order to follow the great success of PUBG, Epic Games stamped the battle royale shooter in a very short time, but clearly with a lot of manpower and budget. Whether it's the better game than Playerunknown's Battlegrounds remains to be seen, I don't want to offend any PUBG people here. But it has taken over his concept, slightly modified it and thus not only proved itself to be a skilful copier, but also blossomed into the battle royale top dog. PUBG Fortnite can hardly be evil, because it basically copied from earlier, less successful representatives of the genre.Ever since the cornerstones of the video game world have been defined and the various genres have been established, innovation has only existed on a small scale anyway basically without exception it is based on already existing principles and ideas.
The Legend of Dark Souls
Whistle on creativity: Dear developers, steal ideas! - Column (4) Source: Sony action role-playing game gameplay, indirect storytelling, angled levels - all of this existed before From Software's Souls games, to come back to them again. What do the developers cite as one of the great inspirations for their works? The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - so much for the genius thought. From Software have taken functioning elements, put them together with a twist and created something great in the process. So the adoption of ideas is rarely due to sheer laziness. Why shouldn't you look to the best of the best, those who have advanced genres or the game industry? Three ideas for the price of two
Whistle to creativity: Dear developers, steals ideas! - Column (2) Source: Ubisoft Which brings me back to my original statement: I think that the stealing of ideas in the gaming world can go on, and as in some of my columns recently, I am referring to Assassin's Creed Valhalla. Please forgive me if you spend 150 hours on a title, you also think a lot about it.As much as I like the game, but every time I stand on a cliff and get annoyed from the prospect of having to climb down miserably slowly, I wished for the glider from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild; even more, his absence acted like a disruptive factor, which did not change with the continued playing time. I don't fly, I fall - elegant
I praise myself Immortals: Fenyx Rising, which I am currently sitting at and which has significantly less fear of contact here. There is sailing around with wings as a glider replacement and stolen from Breath of the Wild, that it is a joy, and in combination with independent (or adopted from other games) aspects such as the combat and upgrade system, a gameplay loop results, which I really enjoy. In short: please steal more!
