Biomutant: No crunch - that's why it was so quiet about development
Crunch is a hotly debated topic in the gaming industry. If stories of excessive overtime and poor working conditions in the development of a new game come to light, this leads to heated discussions. This is what happened at Rockstar Games and CD Projekt Red, for example. But there is also another way, as the team behind the open-world RPG Biomutant proves.
"It was a huge amount of work for the QA because it's not easy to find [bugs] in an open world game . And when they are found, we have to fix them, and that posed additional challenges for us as a small team, "he said. "I mean, we're 20 people and we can't afford to have [employees] leave the studio or get burned during development. That would be devastating. With certain steps you might do that in a limited way. But the most important thing is That you get paid, which is not usual in our industry, crazy enough. And you also get 'recapitulation time', because you have to have some peace and quiet. If you do that constantly 12-14 hours a day, you have to pay for it at some point . "
Stefan Ljungqvist thanked publisher THQ Nordic for being able to complete the development of Biomutant (buy now 116.97 €) in his own way and for having been given the necessary time for it. However, he also stated that after the release of the game there will be a few hours of overtime to ensure support. But that should remain the exception. Biomutant will be released on May 25th for PC, PS4 and Xbox One. An upgraded version for PS5 and Xbox Series X / S is possible.

The release date was only announced a few days ago and one wondered what the team had been up to for so long. Now came the answer. Stefan Ljungqvist, director of Experiment 1010, stated that he was burned out from his previous experience in the game industry. He's been feeling the effects of working overtime and wanted to do it differently."It was a huge amount of work for the QA because it's not easy to find [bugs] in an open world game . And when they are found, we have to fix them, and that posed additional challenges for us as a small team, "he said.
