LEGO Technic: the best sets to motorize

LEGO Technic: the best sets to motorize
Motorizing LEGO Technic models is getting easier and easier. BuWizz and SBrick, two "platforms" produced by third parties for remote control via Bluetooth / Smartphone and for the management of motorized functions that allow you to give life to LEGO Technic models (official sets or MOC - My Own Creation indifferently) and make them more easy to use outdoors.

UPDATE October 2020: new sets come out, new engines are invented. Let's see together in this update the latest engines designed by AFOL Designers, both through the use of 100% original LEGO elements, and through the use of third-party devices. Let's find out what's new.

LEGO Technic # 42115 - Lamborghini Sìan

The famous and wonderful Lamborghini Sìan FKP 37 with its iconic scissor doors will be able to come to life either through the implementation of elements of the historic and glorious LEGO Technic Power Functions platform, both thanks to the “smart brick” of the BuWizz platform. All you have to do is buy on rebrickable.com the instructions made by AFOL Designers:

LEGO Technic # 42100 - Liebherr R 9800 Excavator

The mammoth and majestic 4,108-piece Liebherr R 9800 Excavator with 7 motors and 2 Smart HUB can be "transformed" into a Skid Steer Loader (in practice a “Bobcat” with tracks instead of a rubber wheel) and powered by four of the seven PoweredHub / Control + engines included in the set thanks to the “smart brick” of the BuWizz platform. We remind you that the official LEGO app does not allow you to customize the controls (steering, advancement, drives etc), which makes it almost mandatory for those who make alternative versions of LEGO Technic sets that include SmartHubs, to replace the official control units with third-party equivalents, such as BuWizz. , which vice versa allow to configure and customize any motor control or drive. All you have to do is purchase the instructions made by Eric Trax (who designed and built the model) and M-longer (who developed the instructions) on rebrickable.com: MOC - 42100 Skid Steer Loader.

Alternatively, always with the contents of the LEGO Technic # 42100 - Liebherr R 9800 excavator set you can create a powerful Snowcat full of functions, some manual, some motorized. The author of the project is Milan Reindl / Grohl, who in addition to being (and being) a well-known AFOL Designer, for some years has also been a owner and regularly hired LEGO Designer (he is the author, among others, of the recent set LEGO Technic # 42110 Land Rover Defender - we told you about it in this article and in this review). The instructions, on the other hand, are the work of another and equally well-known AFOL Designer, the very Italian Diego Curcio / Mr. Tekneex. Also in this case, all you need to do is buy the instructions made by Grohl and MrTekneex on rebrickable.com: MOC - 42100 Skid Steer Loader.

The LEGO Technic # 42100 - Liebherr R 9800 excavator set can be purchased from both LEGO Shop @ Home and Amazon.

LEGO Technic # 42110 - Land Rover Defender

We have already told you about this set and how to power it in this article and in this review. The British off-road vehicle has undergone new "transformations", for the most part "static", but one in particular, the MOC - LEGO Technic 42110 B Model - RC Land Rover F1 Car that we propose, involves the use of a unit BuWizz and some additional LEGO Technic Power Functions elements to the set contents:

- for the steering, a LEGO Technic Power Functions # 88004 Servo-Motor (>>> Click here to buy the motor on Amazon) .

- for forward and reverse, two LEGO Technic Power Functions # 8882 Servo-Motor (>>> Click here to buy the motor on LEGO Shop @ Home)

- for control and power supply, a BuWizz unit (>>> Click here to buy the engine on the BuWizz official website)

If you want to try your hand at this conversion from off-road vehicle to Formula1 car, you just need the instructions to buy on rebrickable.com by WW Bricks Studio: MOC - LEGO Technic 42110 B Model - RC Land Rover F1 Car.

The LEGO Technic # 42110 - Land Rover Defender set can be purchased on both the LEGO Shop @ Home and Amazon.

LEGO Technic sets have always been decidedly more "for adults", just like adults are the many AFOL Designers who are dedicated to creating vehicles of all kinds (cars, supercars, racing and Formula 1, construction and construction vehicles) made with LEGO Technic elements instead of (or in combination) with traditional bricks (called LEGO System to distinguish them from LEGO Technic elements). Being adults, it is not enough for us to do broooom with our mouths to play with our models: they have to move, "do things", light up, etc.

So "Bluetooth controllers" like BuWizz and SBrick come to our aid . Both are perfectly compatible with all LEGO Technic Power Functions motors, and the main difference between the two is just that SBrick needs the LEGO Technic Power Funtions Battery Pack while BuWizz incorporates a fantastic rechargeable battery through which it not only controls but also powers the motors that are connected to it.

So let's see a selection of LEGO Technic sets that can be motorized and animated via BuWizz, which has quickly become standard.

LEGO Technic # 42110 Land Rover Defender 4WD + LEGO Technic # 42099 X-treme 4x4 Off-Road Vehicle by Grohl | free video instructions on Youtube

We told you about it in our article some time ago. Everything you need is contained in the two sets. "United" the two sets, you will have a version of LEGO Technic Defender controlled by smartphone, four-wheel drive with reduced (two gears) and reverse.

LEGO Technic # 42111 Dom's Dodge Charger + LEGO Technic # 42095 Remote-controlled Stunt Racer | free video instructions on Youtube

The video instructions will allow whoever owns (or who decides to buy) the two sets to “merge” them and to power Dominic Toretto's black racing car with remote control. Will the set so “animated” be able to start smoking like its real counterpart? Certainly not, but fun is guaranteed! Important: in addition to the two sets (42110 and 42095) you will also need an additional servo motor (for steering), which you can buy here.
