Huawei Mate 40 Pro is official: performance and camera are the strengths
Huawei has just raised the curtain on the Mate 40 series. The event which - for the reasons we all know - took place in live streaming not only made the new Mate 40 Pro protagonists, but also the second edition of the HUAWEI X Gentle Monster smart glasses and the Freebuds Pro headphones. Despite the road full of pitfalls that the Shenzhen giant has been facing for over a year, it seems to have managed to pull yet another masterpiece out of the hat.
Let's analyze the Mate 40 Pro which will be the only model, at least for the moment, to reach the Italian market. Performance and camera seem to be once again the key points of the new top of the range from Huawei. The hardware platform is entrusted to the new Kirin 9000 processor combined with 8 Gigabytes of RAM and 256 Gigabytes of internal memory expandable via NM Card. We are obviously talking about a 5G chip, made with a 5nm production process with 4 x Cortex-A55 at 2.05 GHz, 3 x Cortex-A77 at 2.54 GHz, and 1 x Cortex-A77 at 3.13 GHz. It could be the last of the series due to US bans. In any case, it is a powerful SoC capable of ensuring better performance than its predecessors with a particular focus on energy efficiency as well.
The display size increases compared to the Mate 30 Pro. The OLED panel features a 6.7-inch diagonal with a resolution of 1,344 x 2,772 pixels and a refresh rate of 90Hz. The angle of curvature at the edges remains of 88 °, but the volume rocker that accompanies the power button returns. However, there is the possibility to choose between physical and virtual keys.
As usual now, Huawei has paid particular attention to the choice of materials. The Mate 40 Pro shell is made of glass and will be available in Black, White, Mystic Silver colors with an iridescent finish in addition to the two variants in vegan leather in Sunflower Yellow and Olive Green colors. Too bad that in our part it will come only in the Black and Mystic Silver color variants, at least for the moment. A choice, however, understandable considering the uncertainty of the market.
Most of the technical characteristics are those anticipated by the rumors of recent days. Thus, on the back, we find a system of three cameras housed in a circle that seems to have become the hallmark of the Mate series. The main 50MP (f / 1.9) sensor is paired with a 20MP (f / 1.8) ultra-wide angle and 12MP (f / 3.4) periscope telephoto lens with OIS enabling a 5X optical, hybrid zoom 10X and digital 50X. A further step forward compared to the predecessor Mate 30. On the front, however, there is a 13 Megapixel camera accompanied by a 3D TOF sensor which together are used for the 3D unlocking of the face.
There are many improvements announced from Huawei in the photographic field: from autofocus to correction of distortions. Without excluding new functions such as Tracking Shot and Story Creator for videos with realistic cinematic effects and the ability to easily add background music, filters and effects.
Speaking of new features, among the most interesting there is it is undoubtedly Smart Gesture Control which - just like Google's Motion Sense - allows you to control your smartphone without having to touch it. Simply move your hand over the device to activate it or navigate with the support for all movements: swipe left, right, up and down. A system for answering phone calls is included that works with a single hand gesture. These gestures are also supported by Petal Maps, the new maps app announced by Huawei during the conference, together with Huawei Docs, a document management suite with support for over 50 file formats including PDF, PPT and DOC and to real-time synchronization on the cloud.
The Petal Search search engine is also improved by offering the user a more intuitive and complete experience. It is clear how these new tools represent yet another step forward by the Chinese giant in the creation of a valid alternative to Google apps and services.
The software platform is entrusted to Android 10 in the AOSP version customized with EMUI 11, which provides new features for privacy. When transferring images, for example, users can easily delete sensitive personal data such as location, time and device details before the file is sent. The whole is powered by a 4,400 mAh battery with support for 66W fast charging and 50W wireless charging.
All those who buy on Huawei Store Mate 40 Pro, FreeBuds Studio, HUAWEI X Gentle Monster II and other products, will receive a 30 euro discount for every 200 euro spent, directly in the cart.
The availability of the device in Italy in the other sales channels will be communicated in the next few days.
