Today, however, we are here to tell you our impressions of the Asus ROG Strix RTX 3070 Gaming OC, one of the first aftermarket models we received.- NVIDIA Ampere Streaming Multiprocessors: The building blocks for the world’s fastest, most efficient GPU, the all-new Ampere SM brings 2X the FP32 throughput and improved power efficiency.
- 2nd Generation RT Cores: Experience 2X the throughput of 1st gen RT Cores, plus concurrent RT and shading for a whole new level of ray tracing performance.
- 3rd Generation Tensor Cores: Get up to 2X the throughput with structural sparsity and advanced AI algorithms such as DLSS. Now with support for up to 8K resolution, these cores deliver a massive boost in game performance and all-new AI capabilities.
- Axial-tech Fan Design has been tuned up with more fan blades and a reversed rotational direction for the center fan.
- 2.9-slot design expands cooling surface area compared to last gen for more thermal headroom than ever before.
- Super Alloy Power II includes premium alloy chokes, solid polymer capacitors, and an array of high-current power stages.
- GPU Tweak II provides intuitive performance tweaking, thermal controls, and system monitoring
Technical specifications
Let's start by talking about the technical specifications of the card , not too different from those of the Founders Edition model produced by Nvidia. The ROG Strix RTX 3070 Gaming OC offers 5888 Cuda Core, 8GB of GDDR6 memory at 14Gbps, a 1905MHz boost clock in the so-called "Gaming Mode" that goes up to 1935MHz in "OC Mode" and five video outputs, split into two HDMI 2.1 and three DisplayPort 1.4a.Video Card ROG Strix RTX 3070 Gaming OC RTX 3070 FE RTX 2080 Ti FE GPU GA104 GA104 TU102 Production process Samsung 8nm Samsung 8nm TSMC 12nm Transistor (billions) 17.4 17.4 18.6 Die size (mm ^ 2) 392 392 754 Cuda core 5888 5888 4352 Streaming Multiprocessor 46 46 68 Tensor Core 184 (3rd gen.) 184 (3rd gen.) 544 (2nd gen.) To avoid problems Asus recommends using a power supply of at least 750W. Obviously, the double BIOS is not missing, a feature already seen several times on the ROG Strix GPU series; you can choose between Performance and Quiet Mode, depending on whether you need more performance or more silence.
The cooling system of the ROG Strix RTX 3070 Gaming OC is decidedly impressive: the card measures 318.5 x 140.1 x 57.78 mm making it even bigger than an RTX 3090. It takes up 2.9 slots inside the case, so if you plan to buy it make sure you have enough space.
For this ROG Strix RTX 3070 Gaming OC Asus has revamped their Axial-tech fans, which now ensure even better airflow. The central fan of the dissipation system rotates in the opposite direction to the others in order to eliminate turbulence, it is also equipped with a solid edge (and not grooved like the two external fans) which helps to increase the static pressure. Finally, a cut in the metal backplate allows the air flow to cool the rear area of the card as well, so as to keep the temperature of all components under control.
