Evil Web: Another blow to piracy and illegal IPTV
58 illegal sites and 18 Telegram channels subjected to preventive seizure: this is the result of the Evil Web operation conducted by the Economic-Financial Police Unit of the Guardia di Finanza of Gorizia with the aim of dealing yet another severe blow to audiovisual piracy and publishing in Italy.
In the press release of the Fiamme Gialle it is also stated that" the incisiveness of the intervention was determined by an innovative investigative approach "developed in synergy with the Isonzo Judicial Authority: for the first time in the criminal field in our country a real precautionary measure was adopted against the so-called aliases associated with second level domains. In this way hundreds of new addresses created to circumvent the measures are continuously inhibited. Finally, an international judicial collaboration has been launched to achieve the seizure of the servers from which the material is disclosed.
The investigations started from investigations carried out in Friuli-Venezia Giulia (subsequently extended to Puglia, Emilia-Romagna and abroad) against a single hidden behind the pseudonym Diabolik, eventually involving others three subjects: Doc, Spongebob and Webflix. IPTV was also targeted through which to disseminate content of all kinds.
Activities for the identification of about a thousand subscribers to the so-called pezzotto are still underway. They will be reported for violation of the copyright law with penalties of up to three years of imprisonment and a fine of over 25,000 euros. They also risk running into the crime of receiving stolen goods.
This is the comment of Bagnoli Rossi, Secretary General of FAPAV (Federation for the Protection of Audiovisual and Multimedia Content).
The operation conducted by the Nucleus is well of the Economic-Financial Police of the Guardia di Finanza of Gorizia, testimony of the commitment made by the Police forces in support of the content industry, even more fundamental in this restarting phase of the audiovisual and sports sector. Collaborations with international Authorities must be made increasingly synergistic and rapid in order to counteract a phenomenon, that of piracy, which no longer has borders with ever greater effectiveness. In particular, the adoption of the precautionary measure on the so-called "aliases" associated with the Web domains subject to the provision, we believe can strengthen the effectiveness of the enforcement actions implemented. on an information and awareness campaign on the subject.
The Evil Web operation also affected some illegal IPTV services, which are of great concern in consideration of both their increased use (during the lockdown their illegal use has grown from 10% to 19%) of both the deeply organized and branched structure behind the implementation of such a highly profitable business. It is also essential to continue with information and public awareness actions, the consequences of piracy on the level of data security are far more worrying than one might think: the correlation between piracy and cybercrime is an issue that is no longer possible neglect and needs to be studied in depth and become an integral part of information campaigns.
The impact of the phenomenon linked to audiovisual and editorial piracy does not affect only the professionals, but affects the entire country system. According to a recent survey conducted by FAPAV / Ipsos, it erodes about 500 million euros in terms of GDP and negatively affects about 6,000 jobs.
In closing, a note on the press release on the operation issued by the Guard di Finanza, through the pages of its official website: it includes a video with clips of the investigative activity, one of which clearly shows the URL of an illegal site that is currently still accessible. Perhaps not the best way to sponsor the fight against copyright infringement.
