Battlestar Galactica Deadlock, the culmination of the war on the Cylons

The starting point A new game The DLC Conclusions Battlestar Galactica Deadlock has been a dream come true for many fans of the almost homonymous sci-fi TV series, still considered today as one of the top of the genre despite the years carries on his shoulders (not too many, considering that the last season dates back to 2009). The title of Black Lab Games for Slitherine is not only an excellent strategy, but manages to fully capture the themes and atmospheres of the original work, despite being set during the first war of the Cylons, that is, in a period preceding that told by the series. TV.

Actually the first version of the game, dating back more than three years ago, was very different from the current one. Let's say it was less refined and lacked a whole series of systems and features that were added with many free updates and a large number of DLCs (eight in total, divided into two seasons).

The result is a small saga of surprising quality, which is soon to end, with the launch of the last two DLCs: Modern Ships, which adds new spaceships, some of which also seen in the TV series, and Armistice , which tells the last, dramatic moments of the war, whose conclusion should be well known to fans of the series. As always, the two paid content will be accompanied by an additional free major patch.

The starting point

In general terms, Battlestar Galactica Deadlock is a turn-based strategy where players control more or less numerous fleets of spaceships and must achieve different objectives, different from mission to mission. Each turn you must give orders to move and to attack or defend the ships, trying not to be overwhelmed by the enemies.

The main campaign of the game tells of the efforts of second admiral Lucinda Cain to stop the Cylons, which brought a surprise attack on Picon, completely annihilating the command of the colonial fleet. All this translates into a series of missions, selectable from a tactical map, which allow you to experience the different phases of the clash, controlling increasingly powerful spaceships in increasingly wide-ranging battles. The first version of the game had amazed for how it managed to combine tactical depth and an interface that was all in all affordable, but some problems and many shortcomings had also earned it some criticism too much. Shortcomings and problems that have however been faced hard by the development team, which has modified the modifiable and improved the improvable to make the game experience more complete.

A new game Reporting all the updates Battlestar Galactica Deadlock has received over the past three years would be quite superfluous. Suffice it to say that new missions have been added, some of the ones already present have been revised (especially those related to resources), the skirmish mode has been expanded, a new crew management system has been added and some new ones have been introduced. new music tracks. Also from the graphic point of view, a considerable finishing work has been done. For example, spaceships have gained visible damage on hulls, while the UI graphics have been improved to make it even easier to use.

But it doesn't end there, because new animations have been added, especially on the war table, and a whole series of details have been improved that have transformed the overall rendering of the game, of course for the better. Also in terms of gameplay there have been many changes, with new options (for example to the grouping of spaceships), new space scenarios (nebulae and asteroid fields), the addition of support ships and much more. In addition, with season 2 many other adjustments have been introduced (or will be soon), including multiple ship selection, mouse and keyboard support on consoles, improved portraits for officers, new graphics for the screens of loading, photo mode and new objectives for multiplayer. Overall the support has been really excellent, little to discuss.

The DLC

As we said, the Battlestar Galactica Deadlock DLCs are eight in total. Two are dedicated to adding new units: the Reinforcement Pack and the more recent and aforementioned Modern Ships. The others all have a strongly narrative nature and often go to film situations seen in the TV series.

For example, Broken Alliance adds the civil war between colonies, inspired by the Pegasus episodes, while Anabasis introduces the Survival mode, in which the fleet must survive in enemy territory, which closely resembles what is told in the episodes of the series . Sin and Sacrifice, the DLC that concludes season 1, introduces a new campaign with eleven missions, following that of the base game, which tells of another crucial event in the war with the Cylons. Season 2 begins with Resurrection, that is with a new campaign of ten missions that picks up the story a few years after the facts told in Sin and Sacrifice (we are trying to avoid spoilers, if you had not understood), also adding many missions related to resources . So does Ghost Fleet Offensive, which however tells a more specific fact and which is the last DLC released so far. Armistice, the conclusion of season 2, will be released in the next few hours and the title should already make you understand what its eight-mission campaign will focus on.

Conclusions

Battlestar Galactica Deadlock it's a beautiful project, grown with its community and commendably supported by the publishers and development teams. Fans of the TV series should not miss it, whether they play on PC or on consoles, because at present it is undoubtedly the best videogame transposition of Battlestar Galactica in circulation.

On closer inspection it is also worth spending money on DLCs, which really add a lot to the work as a whole, both in terms of hours of play, both in depth and in actual mythology. If you haven't bothered to look at it up to now, this is the right time to repent. The Armistice is about to arrive.
