Single network: Italy is pushing for the TIM-Enel agreement
By the end of July, Telecom Italia and Enel are called to sign a memorandum of understanding with the aim of speeding up negotiations to create a unique broadband network in the country. This is what Reuters reported over the weekend, citing the request made on Friday by Roberto Gualtieri, Minister of Economy, against Francesco Starace, Enel CEO.

TIM-Enel together for a single broadband network

The goal is to bridge the gap that still separates Italy from the rest of Europe in terms of connectivity services. At stake is the union between the telco infrastructure and that of Open Fiber, a wholesale operator controlled by Enel and CDP (Cassa Depositi e Prestiti) which already puts its technology at the service of companies such as Sky WiFi, EOLO, Fastweb, Tiscali, Vodafone and Wind Tre.

The discussions on this front have so far not led to anything, encountering difficulties mainly related to a divergence of views on issues such as regulation and governance of the network: TIM would have claimed to exercise full control over the reality born from the union between the parties, starting a dialogue with the US fund Kohlberg Kravis Roberts to sell 40% of its business linked to the management of the last mile that connects users to the most peripheral point of their infrastructure.

At the same time, to further complicate the situation, the rumors recently circulated about the Australian group Macquarie that would be interested in acquiring a part or the entire Open Fiber package currently controlled by Enel with an economic investment that could reach 8 billion dollars.
