How Fortnite cleared Crossplay

How Fortnite cleared Crossplay
The generation of consoles we are about to leave behind has had ups and downs, interesting games, masterpieces and of course its natural dose of flop. Nothing new under the sun, from this point of view, nothing that really makes the news, in short, nothing up to one of the great goals achieved over these six / seven years by holding the pad of Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in your hands: the crossplay. Yes, if there is something that we will take with us, going into the future, it is precisely the possibility of playing with and against users of other consoles. A real revolution unthinkable only a few years ago and for which we have to thank those who, at least in recent times, are criticized more often: Epic Games. It is in fact thanks to the company that grinds profits with Fortnite if today we can challenge anyone who owns the same game on the same playing field, regardless of the platform used.

The power of numbers

Fortnite was certainly not the first to show off a similar option; the first company to make similar attempts was in fact Microsoft, with the 2007 Shadowrun game. The attempt was not very successful, also because of the lukewarm reception by the public who considered the game very uninteresting despite some very good ideas. Epic, on the other hand, was able to underpin its strategy with a success that is unmatched in the field of competitive multiplayer, convincing the major hardware manufacturers to do what they had promised themselves never to do: open, indeed open wide, their watertight ecosystems .

Microsoft has proved to be immediately more receptive, as indeed we told you we had tried her in the past, but to convince Nintendo and Sony to do the same, was not at all easy, especially with the latter. Epic Games, however, insisted, pointed to the foot, and the same was done by the players of Fortnite, which continued to multiply month-to-month. The risk, for Sony, became concrete: to play with friends and not feel isolated, a lot of players would clearly have changed the platform, choosing, for instance, "console" atypical such as smartphones and tablets that they already had in house a few units. And so it was that the story was radically changed, and thanks to the game that many players love to hate because it is so popular.

One leads to another

After Fortnite, things have changed also for so many other games, among them is impossible not to mention the phenomenal Rocket League, the immortal Minecraft, or even the last Call of Duty. PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Pc and often mobile platforms, can now compete together, or help each other without limits of compatibility, a profound change that still involves some problem. In the meantime, we don't really know the technical reasons, but opening up to other platforms, the risk of coming across the phenomena of lag seems to increase, and then there is the problem linked to the Pc with a keyboard and a mouse may have advantages in some cases difficult to fill with talent. But the things we are certain will improve the way, and with the arrival of the next-gen, both through a better integration of the systems with the addition of new options that allow you to filter the opponents according to the devices used, the possibility already present in some games. Small imperfections not entirely unexpected, when the revolution is so important. Small imperfections that take nothing away from the pleasure of dominating opponents of a platform to rival.
