The Cuphead Show: new details on the Netflix series

Fans of classic animated films were quite thrilled when Netflix announced last July that it was working on a new show based on Studio MDHR's critically acclaimed Cuphead game. The TV series, which will debut on Netflix, has been shown in some clips on the occasion of this year's edition of the Annecy Festival. The audience also saw the participation of executive producers Dave Wasson, Cosmo Segurson, CJ Kettler and Chad and Jared Moldenhauer who stopped to discuss various aspects of the show and shared some highlights, animations, design and fun curiosities about the long-awaited project.

Dave Wasson, famous figure of Disney Channel shows like Mickey and Star vs. the Forces of Evil, said:

“I was passionate about animation because I love short films, but when I started studying animation at school, they said, 'I'm sorry, nobody is making short films anymore' . I'm a huge fan of the rubber-style animation of the 1930s and when we saw the first images of the video game, everything seemed so authentic and faithful to that era. I knew this project was going to be really special. From there, it was a bit of a talent contest to see who the showrunners would be, so I had to launch CJ Kettler (King Features Syndicate) and [game creators] Chad and Jared on Netflix, and every time we went ahead it was said, 'OK, you've come so far, now don't blow it up. Everyone must love you! ' "

Segurson stated that he had been himself a long time fan of the animated short films the classics of the ’30s, in particular, the cartoons of the Fleischer Popeye and Betty Boop . According to the producers, the whole of The Cuphead Show takes place in a world called Inkwell Isles as the video game includes all the different lands. Segurson, he added, “Cuphead and Mugman often visit these different parts of the island to live their adventures”.

Wasson also explained that, although the creative team wanted to pay homage to the cartoons of the ’30s, he also had the goal of telling stories that were really motivated by the characters:

“our show is a comedy-friendly with regard to its nucleus. Everything comes from these characters: Cuphead, for example, is a lovable con man who craves constantly for fun and adventure, which also has a cup on his head! The catalyst of the show is Cuphead, and the desire of his brother Mugman to venture out and find something more than to live in this hut in the middle of the forest with the elder Kettle! The good thing of the episode pilot of the show is that it is designed to present the characters as we spend a day in the life of Cuphead and Mugman.”

The producers have praised the team of Lighthouse Studios, to be able to offer the right kind of visual elements and animated and for having re-created digitally, the feeling of being a series of hand-drawn like the classic cartoons . Finally, there was also time to congratulate the work of the talented art director Andrea Fernandez who said that the series was the dream of an art director, became a reality.

The presentation of Annecy also shows interviews with some of the other members of the cast, as the voice actors Tru Valentino (Cuphead), Frank Todaro (Mugman), Luke Millington-Drake (Devil), Grey Griffin (Chalice) and Joe Hanna (Elder Kettle ) . The Cuphead Show will premiere on Netflix by the end of the year .
