Streets of Rage 4: here's how SEGA took and approved the idea

Cyrille Imbert, CEO and executive producer of DotEmu, spoke of how SEGA accepted and approved the idea of Streets of Rage 4, the new chapter of its well-known series of sliding fighting game for Mega Drive.

Imbert confessed to having been a SEGA kid (no jokes), owner of a Game Gear. One of his first games for the handheld console was Streets of Rage, which forged his gaming career. For this reason, at some point he ardently desired to give a worthy follow-up to the trilogy.

The idea came after the success of Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap of 2017, speaking with Ben Fiquet, the founder and art director of Lizardcube (the development studio of Wonder Boy and Streets of Rage 4) . Imbert: "For the next game I'd like to do something crazy and make a sequel to Streets of Rage." Fiquet not only found the idea interesting, but showed SoR artwork to Imbert. The signs to continue were all there, so the pitch of the game was made, not too elaborate according to the authors themselves, which was brought to SEGA.

The Japanese publisher reacted very well to the idea, so much so that it gave its approval two months later, without discussing any details. You probably liked the fact that DotEmu and LizardCube wanted to stay true to the gameplay of the original games.
