E3: the 5 best moments of all time - article

E3: the 5 best moments of all time - article

The first weeks of June are those in which we usually find ourselves discussing (sometimes animatedly) the big announcements of E3. This, however, is a somewhat special year. It's true, we had the great reveal of Sony's PS5 and there are also many other events that await us in the future but it's not the same thing, isn't it? The Covid-19 pandemic forced the global gaming industry to give up on the usual Los Angeles events these days and opt for streaming presentations to showcase new games and consoles.

Next month, for example, Microsoft will present all the news related to the Xbox world and, who knows, maybe this new formula will allow us to enjoy all the news to the fullest. Yet we can't help thinking about the intense weeks of E3, the excitement, discussions and live events. For this reason, in honor of this type of events that may never return to normal, we thought of reliving five of the highlights of the E3 of the past years. Have fun!

The exciting reveal of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

The year was 2004. Nintendo fans all over the world were still easing the discontent of the cel-shaded design of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and, after a rather pleasant E3 conference, Reggie's powerful voice uttered the coveted words 'one more thing ...' ('one more thing', formula which usually precedes a large and unexpected reveal, ed.)

As the first images of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess Hyrule flowed across the screen, the crowd fell into a religious silence enjoying the greatness of that vision . At a certain point, however, Link appeared astride his brave steed, with his sword raised to heaven. The room, of course, exploded in a riot of screams, between amazement and jubilation.

I Remember to have seen in that presentation, as a boy: the walls of my room were covered with posters de 'the Lord of The Rings' and, if I concentrate, I can still feel the chills that I ran up my spine at the thought of a true sequel to Ocarina of Time. Then it appeared Miyamoto on stage brandishing the same, the iconic sword of Link. The hero had grown, we had grown up and this new game would have been completely different than in the past.

it Is strange to think of it now: Wind Waker, with the passing of the years, it has become one of the favorite chapters from the fans, while Twilight Princess is the past a little bit in the second floor. And yet, in those days, Nintendo was only giving the community what they asked for. Amazing.

Microsoft, and the enthusiasm for the Kinect

it Is really difficult to choose the time of E3, which summarize at best the enthusiasm of Microsoft for the Kinect. Maybe the reveal of Project Natal, with support from celebrities such as Steven Spielberg? Or those finished gameplay that showed people that he enjoyed waving his arms? Or, again, the unrealistic promises of Project Milo? And what about the choice to provide us with ponchos fluorescent to all present to emphasize even more the presentation? No, there are. The moment that best sums up the project Kinect can be only one: the eight seconds in which Kudo Tsunoda was trying to show us the bottom of the shoes of your Xbox Avatar. The result? The character started to squirm so absolutely unnatural, almost like a nightmare. Well, I think that this can give us an idea of what has been one of the most big failures of the Redmond company until today.

The edition in which the legends have come true

I don't know if it was because of the fact that here it was night, but the frenzy that was unleashed during the conference E3 Sony, 2015 is something that cannot be easily seen.

The event began with an ad bomb. As a lightning from a clear sky, The Last Guardian has manifested himself before us, after having been absent from the scene for so many years. Finally the game seemed real, the concrete, and there was even a release date set for one year later. As if that wasn't enough, Fumito Ueda was sitting in the first rows of the hall, scaring away all of the rumor on a hypothetical friction with Sony.

Immediately after, in addition, we have given our first glimpse at the Horizon: Zero Dawn and many other games that are very important, including No Man's Sky. The conference was going great but the surprises were not finished yet.

A dove glided in the sky above a city, strangely familiar and after a few seconds, appeared the name of Tetsuya Nomura. Oh, my god. A man with a minigun in place of the arm walked in front of the camera: start the palpitations. Behind him there was a skinny guy with a huge sword on his shoulders. Oh, my god! . That was Cloud Strife, that was Final Fantasy VII. Black screen. Please, give me answers.

And then it appeared the word: Remake. The room and all over the internet have literally exploded.

Sony, however, had not yet finished. After the launch of the trailer of the Final Fantasy VII Remake, I heard someone say jokingly: "this step is going to jump out even Shenmue 3". You want to know the funniest thing? Appeared really.

backwards compatibility becomes a standard

to Be clear: I know that is not one of the most thrilling moments, I know that it can't compete with Keanu Reeves, which tells the public how wonderful it is but it is a moment which has a particular importance for the world of the console.

I'm talking about an announcement made by Phil Spencer on the stage of the Microsoft conference, while we were discussing Project Scarlett, the machine we now know as the Xbox Series X.

"last year," he said, "the team has decided to start work on the feature that occupied the first place in the list of the requests of the community. At the beginning we were not sure of being able to settle, but today I have the pleasure to announce that the next Xbox will be backwards-compatible with Xbox One."

Simply insert the disc in the console and you can play it, without any further operations. Here is what should be the standard for the future!

I wonder if that moment has influenced the choice of Sony to make backwards-compatible PlayStation 5, or if it was already part of the plan. Anyway, thanks.

Finally.

Ubisoft behaves...by Ubisoft!

in Addition to producing some of the best games open world on the market, the task of Ubisoft is to add a little sparkle at E3, every single year. There has been some false step in the course of the years, of course, but between dancing bears and the brilliant presence of Aisha Tyler, this publisher seems to be the one that has a better grasp of the spirit of E3: a celebration of video games in all their forms.

my favorite moments are too many to mention. I remember with particular affection the choice of taking a few minute break from video games to reintroduce the laser tag in the world. But then there was also that glorious moment dedicated to Miyamoto and the Rabbids, and my two favorite moments of E3 ever. The first is the one that has involved Antti of RedLynx that, during his march towards the stage and went crashing loudly to the ground between the applause of the audience. The second is definitely the moment when the curtain is raised on a Tetsuya Mizuguchi with white gloves headed for a level of Child of Eden. Ubisoft reminds us every year that video games can be brilliant .
